Teacher Practitioner & Lead Pharmacist Trauma & Orthopaedics – Band 8a

This is a joint post between the University of Bath and North Bristol NHS Trust. The position is equally split between both organisations and involves teaching, curriculum development and clinical leadership in the Trauma & Orthopaedics specialty.


Main Duties of the Job

* Develop, deliver and assess units of teaching within the ‘AP3T’ suite of postgraduate programmes at the University of Bath.
* Efficiently provide, manage and develop the Trauma and Orthopaedics clinical pharmacy service in line with medicines legislation, professional standards and trust policies.
* Provide specialist clinical pharmacy services to the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal (NMSK) Division.
* Teach and supervise less experienced colleagues, pharmacists, technicians and students.


Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Responsible for the provision, management and development of a highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the orthopaedic specialty to achieve a high standard of efficiency and effectiveness.
* Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure the safe, efficient, evidence‑based and rational use of medicines and minimise patient risk.
* Contribute to the overall development of the clinical pharmacy service through active participation in relevant meetings and close collaboration with pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
* Demonstrate strong leadership skills across all elements of the role.
* Attend consultant and ward board rounds whenever possible to provide pharmaceutical expertise.
* Provide reports on the use and cost of medicines to the orthopaedic specialty, analyse them and advise on strategies to ensure cost‑effective use of resources.
* Write relevant protocols, procedures and guidelines for use within the orthopaedic speciality.
* Provide pharmaceutical expertise to multidisciplinary working groups that consider protocols, policies, guidelines and integrated care pathways.
* Assimilate and analyse clinical trial information on new pharmaceutical products intended for use within the orthopaedic speciality for submission to the Area Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation Committee (APMOC).
* Ensure that an accurate medication history is obtained for each patient using appropriate sources (GP, community pharmacist, patient/carer, clinic notes, nursing home).
* Deals with high‑level pharmaceutical queries and provides advice to patients/carers and medical staff.
* Provide a comprehensive clinical ward pharmacy service to the speciality and work with stakeholders to optimise resources and improve patient flow.
* Work closely with the Discharge Liaison Pharmacist and GP/community pharmacists to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients.
* Record all major interventions made.
* Investigate and support recording of adverse drug reactions.
* Audit and risk‑manage selected areas of practice to promote continuous quality improvement.
* Maintain and develop medicines‑management systems with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff; supervise and contribute to the development of pharmacy technicians and other dedicated staff.
* Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, junior doctors, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and medical and nursing staff; mentor pharmacists on aspects of the specialist area.
* Act as a lead for the trauma and orthopaedic speciality and supervise other pharmacy staff as team lead.
* Act as an appraiser in the pharmacy appraisals programme.
* Ensure all relevant procedures are adhered to, reviewed regularly and that all necessary records are completed.
* Follow departmental procedures in accordance with local practices and legislative requirements.
* Provide professional cover in the dispensary on a sessional basis.
* Keep up to date with developments in pharmacy, attend study days and courses to maintain professional knowledge.
* Maintain a record of CPD.
* Work with the specialty to comply with national and local patient‑safety drug alerts and initiatives and help implement associated action plans.
* Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to orthopaedic patients in all clinical areas.
* Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy or their deputy.


Teacher Practitioner Responsibilities

* Deliver high‑quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice, research, study and/or teaching experience.
* Contribute to the development of units of study and assessment regimens; identify learning objectives, teaching methods and develop materials and resources for face‑to‑face and online delivery.
* Contribute to design, implementation and evaluation of assessment tools and criteria for courses; set and mark assessments, provide written or oral feedback.
* Act as convenor of designated postgraduate units.
* Coordinate the work of external workshop contributors, authors and markers.
* Engage proactively in ongoing professional development in subject area and teaching & learning.
* Participate in programme evaluation and facilitate student feedback; reflect on teaching design and delivery.
* Carry out pastoral role for students; maintain knowledge of support services and refer as appropriate.
* Promote the University of Bath as a teaching centre for clinical pharmacy at a national and international level.
* Carry out other teaching‑related duties as allocated by the Head of Department, Director of AP3T or Programme Lead.
* Participate in teaching‑related administrative activities such as team meetings, internal review meetings and boards of examiners.

* Ability to successfully develop knowledge in specialist area
* Relevant IT skills to ECDL level or equivalent
