Paediatric Occupational Therapist

The Warrington Occupational Therapy Team is looking for a band 6 Therapist who has a passion for working with children and young adults across a variety of settings. You will be part of an experienced team who provide assessment, advice and intervention to support children and young people to develop their skills in everyday activities.
We encourage applicants with experience of working in a paediatric setting or those who work with adults with physical, developmental conditions or complex needs.

Job responsibilities
Job Purpose:
To provide Occupational Therapy intervention to children (aged 0 to 19 years), with a variety of conditions; work across the geographical areas within the borough; manage a defined caseload using evidence-based client-centred principles to access, plan, implement and evaluate interventions; supervise Occupational Therapy students and provide leadership and clinical supervision for other staff as delegated; and continue own professional development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
* Legally and professionally responsible for all aspects of own work and accountable for delegated duties to junior staff.
* Use a wide variety of assessment methods to identify clients who require intervention.
* Ensure interventions take place in the most appropriate setting (hospital or client home).
* Plan, prepare and undertake client assessments for a designated caseload.
* Identify areas of occupational performance and skill deficit in all functional activities of daily life.
* Work with clients and carers to identify goals as part of an overall care plan in cooperation with the multidisciplinary team.
* Plan and implement individual and/or group interventions using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
* Monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for clients with multiple needs/pathology to measure progress and ensure effectiveness.
* Apply a broad understanding of the effect of disability and recommend adaptations to the physical and social environment.
* Justify own clinical judgments when differences of opinion occur.
* Act as an advocate for patient needs when necessary.
* Demonstrate effective communication skills with carers, team members, OT colleagues and other agencies.
* Take a lead in multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Maintain good working relationships.
* Convey information on diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plans in verbal and non-verbal forms that clients/relatives can understand.
* Use skills to obtain consent and cooperation to treatment plans.
* Educate children, parents/guardians and teachers about conditions and their effects.
* Contribute to client‑related developments and activities within the multi‑professional team.
Record Keeping
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust Policies and College of OT Standards.
* Maintain timely statistics and other records as requested by the Occupational Therapy Service and the Trust.
* Monitor the quality of record keeping for support staff and students.
Professional Ethics
* Comply with the College of Occupational Therapy (COT) Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, HCPC Guidance and National and Trust Policies and Procedures.
* Respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to a service sensitive to these needs.
Service Responsibilities
* Participate in the day‑to‑day organisation and development of the service.
* Contribute to the Trust’s clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.
* Show understanding of national and local guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on service delivery.
* Monitor materials and equipment; report defects or deficits to the Team Leader.
* Demonstrate good personal time management, punctuality and reliable attendance.
* Advise the Team Leader on resources required to carry out the job.
* Prescribe short‑term loan wheelchairs and equipment for patient use within available resources.
* Review and reflect on own practice and performance through supervision and appraisal.
* Maintain a professional portfolio of Continuing Professional Development.
* Comply with annual PDR and appraisal system.
* Plan and implement induction of junior staff/students.
* Deliver in‑service training for own profession and others.
* Supervise junior staff as delegated by senior staff.
* Regularly supervise, evaluate and assess OT students, including negotiating learning contracts and setting objectives.
* Adhere to Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Additional responsibilities:
* Postholder must be a driver with access to a vehicle for work purposes.
* Will be required to undertake mandatory and service‑specific training and be involved in training and supervision of staff as required.
* Will receive regular support and supervision and participate in ongoing service development and progression.

Person Specification

Qualifications
* Diploma/Degree in OT.
* Wheelchair Accreditation or to be acquired within 12 months.
