Are you looking to move on from working ‘out of hours’ and to progress to a Team Leader position in Clinical Biochemistry ?

Royal Preston Clinical Biochemistry is a highly advanced UKAS accredited laboratory. We value our staff and fully support their professional development. We are an IBMS approved training laboratory.

We are well equipped to provide an efficient high quality diagnostic service. Our equipment comprises Roche Cobas PRO systems with pre analytics and tracking, IDS iSYS, Tosoh G11s, Waters Aquity UHPLC, Xevo TQD and Xevo TQS micro mass spectrometers, Perkin Elmer Pinnacle AA, Z480 for PCR and Radiometer Flex blood gas analysers. Staff rotate within the Clinical Biochemistry department using the latest automation for routine workflow and providing the opportunity to develop more specialist skills.

The post is full time 37.5 hours per week.

This post will be appointed to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, however candidates should be aware that Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is part of a pathology collaboration project.

Four provider organisations in L&SC have committed to form a network and collaborate on pathology services, including Blackpool Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. The intention is to form one pathology entity which will be is hosted by one of the existing provider organisations.

Main duties of the job

Your duties will include supporting the team in the day to day organisation, management and supervision of laboratory areas to ensure delivery of a timely, quality service. You will be expected to take an active role in the training and development of staff and to have good communication skills. You will be expected to participate in the Senior management meetings to understand and support delivery of the operational services as well as deputise in the absence of the Lead BMS and other Team Leaders.

Applicants must be HCPC registered Biomedical scientist and should hold an MSc qualification in Biomedical Science (you will be required to provide proof of qualification/MSc module information prior to interview).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include, but not be limited to:

1. To provide technical and organisational supervision within the department.
2. To supervise and train staff as they rotate through the department
3. To deputise for the Lead BMS as required and other team leader in Haematology as required.
4. Performance of specialised investigations and techniques in all areas the department.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

5. HCPC BMS registration
6. Specialist portfolio in relevant field (or equivalent)
7. Biomedical sciences (hons) degree or equivalent qualification
8. MSc in Biomedical Science.

9. Management Qualification
10. Training Qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

11. Experience as a specialist in a Biochemistry laboratory
12. Experience of troubleshooting analytical and technical problems
13. Good knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessments
14. Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills.
15. Experience of training other staff
16. Experience of UKAS inspection.
17. Quality management experience
18. Experience of effectively managing resources .

Desirable criteria

19. In depth knowledge of similar equipment
20. Experience of providing training to other staff groups
21. Experience of leading a team/Leadership skill
22. Experience of UKAS clearance of finding.
