Management Accountant / Outsourcing Manager
Location: Just outside of Cambridge – Hybrid working

AJ Chambers is recruiting for an experienced Management Accountant / Outsourcing Manager to join a well‑established, forward‑thinking accountancy firm serving a diverse portfolio that includes high‑growth tech and biotech start‑ups.
The Role
You’ll work across a varied portfolio of around 40 clients, providing hands‑on management accounting, financial reporting, and advisory support. Approximately half of these clients currently receive management accounts, with a mix of monthly and quarterly reporting cycles, and others requiring VAT return preparation.
Day‑to‑day, you’ll:
* Oversee and prepare management accounts for a diverse portfolio of SME clients (typically £1m‑£2m turnover)
* Review bookkeeping and VAT returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance
* Liaise directly with business owners and finance teams, offering commercial insights and financial recommendations
* Support start‑up and scale‑up clients within the high‑tech and biotech sectors
* Assist with process improvements, system migrations, and unpicking complex client issues
* Mentor junior team members, reviewing work and helping with development
* Play a key role in shaping the department and taking on more management responsibility as the current head transitions to retirement
About You
You can be at any level of experience: from newly qualified to those with a few years of post‑qualified experience who are ready to step up.
You’ll bring:
* Strong management accounts and bookkeeping experience within a practice or outsourcing environment
* Confident use of Xero and related cloud accounting tools
* A hands‑on approach, happy to get involved in the detail where needed
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong client relationships
* Ambition and leadership potential – this role offers a clear route to managing the department
