As an Principal Electrical Duty Holder, you will lead and manage electrical safety, statutory compliance, and operational technology across the organisation's clean water and wastewater infrastructure.
You will be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of electrical systems, including High Voltage (HV) assets, and will act as the senior authority under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
What you'll do
1. Lead investigations into electrical incidents and implement corrective actions.
2. Oversee the operation, maintenance, and safety of HV systems, including switchgear, transformers, and protection schemes.
3. Provide technical leadership on HV fault diagnostics, protection coordination, and system resilience.
4. Act as an experienced HV Senior Authorised Person (SAP), ensuring safe systems of work and isolation procedures.
5. Manage the governance and lifecycle of OT systems, including SCADA, PLCs, telemetry, and control networks.
6. Ensure OT systems are integrated safely with electrical infrastructure and meet cybersecurity and reliability standards.
7. Support the design and commissioning of OT components in capital projects.
8. Coordinate statutory electrical inspections and testing across all sites.
9. Ensure timely completion of remedial actions and maintain accurate compliance records.
10. Liaise with external auditors and regulatory bodies as required.
11. Provide expert input into electrical and OT aspects of capital projects, upgrades, and new installations.
12. Review technical designs, specifications, and commissioning plans for compliance and safety.
13. Collaborate with engineering, operations, and asset management teams to ensure project success.
14. Act as the appointed Duty Holder under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
15. Ensure compliance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and relevant water industry standards.
16. Develop and implement electrical safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
17. Appoint and oversee Authorised Persons (APs) and Competent Persons (CPs).
What you'll need
For this role, we require someone who has a safety-first mindset with high integrity and accountability. Strong leadership and mentoring skills, as well as excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, are also required.
You should be able to be analytical and decisive under pressure, while being collaborative and adaptable across multidisciplinary teams.
You will also need:
18. a degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline
19. to hold Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
20. extensive experience managing electrical systems in utilities, infrastructure, or industrial environments
21. proven experience as a High Voltage Senior Authorised Person (HV SAP)
22. strong working knowledge of HV protection systems and safety protocols
23. familiarity with Operational Technology systems and statutory inspection regimes.
Desirable qualifications include:
24. City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations)
25. City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection & Testing)
26. IOSH or NEBOSH Certificate in Health & Safety
27. HV SAP certification and training.
