Cranstons is an award winning, trusted and recognised food brand in Cumbria and further afield. From its’ origins in the Eden Valley in 1914 it has steadily grown and now includes 2 traditional high street butchers’ shops, in Penrith and Hexham, as well as 4 Food Halls in Penrith, Orton Grange, Carlisle and Brampton which combine its own butchery and delicatessen goods with a wider range of local produce. Turnover is £16m and the company employs over 200 dedicated staff. As part of its long-term vision and succession plan, Philip and Roger Cranston consider now is the time to appoint a new Managing Director to take the business through its next phase of development and growth.
The Opportunity
Reporting to Philip Cranston, Executive Chairman, the role of the Managing Director will be to develop and implement the strategies that will deliver on the future vision. Specifically:
* Directional and motivational leadership of an existing experienced senior team responsible for retail operations, production operations, commercial, marketing & business development, finance & HR and IT infrastructure
* Driving and delivering performance in all areas via healthy challenge especially in areas of cost management, profitability and operational performance
* Instilling a true respect across all teams for critical business processes and effective collaboration and communication to improve efficiencies and eliminate duplication
The Person
The key requirement is to attract an individual with a tangible track record of success achieved through exceptional leadership and business acumen. Experience of working in the food industry (retail or production) would be desirable but not essential. Specifically:
* An inspiring and effective leader & communicator
* Proven commercial acumen, sets high standards and creates company-wide “buy-in”
* Is recognised as innovative, self-motivated and hands-on in approach
* Demonstrates effective people management skills at all levels, ability to recognise the advantages of Cranstons “family ethos” and time-served workforce, but able to influence appropriate culture and behaviour
* An understanding of the nature of a SME where a multi-product offering is part of its USP
* Motivated by individual and team success
* A genuine interest in Cranstons and the food industry
