Rowan Veterinary Centre is an independent small animal practice on the beautiful Fylde coast. We are expanding and are looking for an additional new graduate vet to join our team of 8 vets who provide high-quality first-opinion services to our patients and clients. We have two sites: our purpose-built practice in Warton (near Kirkham) and a branch surgery in Blackpool.
We really do love nurturing new graduates; they add a real burst of energy and enthusiasm to the practice, and we are well set up to provide excellent support for any new graduates who are interested in the role. Of our three most recent vet additions, two have joined us from other practices and have brought a wealth of experience to Rowan, including our exotics certificate holder who handles the work for Blackpool Zoo.
At Rowan, we've cultivated an excellent working environment based on our five core values: growth, respect, courage, belonging, and making a difference. Our culture is all about getting it right and learning from our mistakes without playing the blame game that's unfortunately common in the veterinary industry. The success of our culture is reflected in our long-standing team, with 5 of our 8 vets having started their journey with us as newly graduated or one-year qualified.
Our vision and mission for the practice is to be a hub of hope within the profession by transforming the experience for everyone we welcome through our doors. From pets to vets to reps, we want people to believe that working in this industry can be great.
We are a fear-free and ISFM silver cat-friendly clinic with certificate holders in surgery, ophthalmology, Zoo medicine, chronic pain management and acupuncture, along with vets currently undertaking certificates in small animal medicine and behaviour. We also benefit from a visiting certificate holder in orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery and a specialist in cardiology.
We are team-orientated and encourage personal and professional development. We are passionate about mental health and wellbeing, and our management team is approachable and happy to develop new processes and ways of working to support the continuous improvement of our clinical standards, client care and services offered.
What our team say about us
“I joined the team nearly 6 years ago at a time when I thought I might actually leave the profession if the job didn’t work out! My colleagues have since become some of my closest friends, and they’ve helped me flourish both personally and professionally. The vets are always encouraged to follow any interests and passions without any pressure and I’m always proud of the team for striving to constantly improve their clinical knowledge. I still maintain if I hadn’t found such a wonderful team, I wouldn’t be a practising vet today.” Leanne MRCVS
“I began my career with Rowan Veterinary Centre almost 6 years ago as a new graduate. From the start, it has always been a supportive place to work. I have grown both professionally and personally since starting here. Both my clinical and non-clinical pursuits have been supported, I have almost finished my post-graduate diploma in clinical animal behaviour, which Rowan has been fully supportive of and have also been encouraged to follow my interest in mental health and wellbeing, having accomplished a level 3 diploma in workplace wellbeing and being a qualified mental health first aider. Having been supported so well as a new graduate, I recently undertook the GDP advisor training and am now a GDP advisor myself, so I can help our new graduates start their careers.
The management team encourages new ideas and two-way feedback. They are approachable and always striving to be better. Rowan has always been a supportive place to work, and the team supports each other both personally and professionally.” Nicole MRCVS
“I joined the team here nearly 18 months ago and have never looked back. Rowan encourages both personal and professional growth, fostering a positive, forward-thinking environment. Team members are actively listened to and given the opportunity to contribute to an ever-evolving practice. The people you work with are the reason you want to come to work each day, supporting each other in challenging times and celebrating success. As one team, we draw on each other’s knowledge and expertise across all departments; I feel this is just one reason that Rowan provides the care and professionalism to both our customers and patients. Our commitment to our customer journey is something I’m very passionate about.” Kelly, Client Care Manager
The Rota
Our vets work a set 4-day week with a shared weekend rota. The weekend rota is currently 1:6. We can guarantee the weekend rota will never be more than 1:5.
Monday through Thursday consists of:
* 2 x 7.30 pm finishes, with consults finishing at 6.40 pm, allowing time for a daily debrief at the end of each day. One 7.30 pm finish is followed by inpatient care
* 1 x 5 pm finish
* 1 x day off
With there being no change to people’s Monday - Thursday hours, we have found that vets can better commit to things outside of work and settle well within the area.
The weekend rota consists of:
* 1 x Friday 1 pm finish
* 2 x Friday 5 pm finish
* 1 x Friday 6 pm finish
* 1 x Friday 6.30 pm finish and Saturday morning (8.30 am -1 pm)
* 1 x Friday 7.30 pm finish and a Saturday morning (8.30 am- 1 pm) followed by inpatient care
As the practice’s OOH is purely for our inpatients, it is generally very quiet. There is always an RVN on call to assist if needed. If there are no inpatients by 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday, you have the remaining weekend off.
Our phones are covered by the nearby Emergency Veterinary Services (EVS). As a practice, we cover the OOH each Tuesday night from the EVS practice. This means each vet covers a night just once a month, along with a qualified veterinary nurse and with an additional experienced vet as backup if required. You are given the following morning off after this shift.
We value our team and always aim to offer a good work-life balance, so we have a system in place to submit the weekends you wish to or wish not to work, allowing flexibility for everyone when making plans outside of work.
The local area
We’re a sociable team that enjoys getting together outside of work, whether for our Christmas party, summer BBQ, or just taking the dogs for a walk! There is lots to explore locally, from the bright lights of Blackpool to sandy beaches and beautiful countryside. For a bit of city life, Liverpool and Manchester are just an hour away, which also means you have easy access to airports for travel further afield.
The Package
* Salary of £37,000 for a new graduate (basic salary £35,000 plus you will be paid an extra £220 on top for each night you do at our OOH service, which equates to an annual salary of just over £37,000)
* Enrolment on the Vet Dynamics Vet Graduate Academy
* No fixed CPD budget as we’d rather agree with each member of the team which direction they want to go in with CPD (certificates are encouraged and funded!), and we guarantee a minimum of 5 days for CPD per year
* Professional fees paid for specialism veterinary memberships and VDS
