We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Engineering Student to join our ESG & Sustainability team for a placement period. The successful candidate will support key sustainability initiatives and engineering projects that align with our ESG strategy, helping to reduce environmental impact, improve operational efficiency, and promote responsible innovation. Additionally, the student will engage with internal and external stakeholders to support ESG initiatives, providing valuable hands-on experience in driving sustainability projects within a professional setting.
Responsibilities
 * Engineering – Assist in the development and implementation of sustainability-focused engineering projects (e.g., energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation).
 * Engineering collaboration – Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, terminal sites, ESG) to integrate ESG goals into project planning and execution.
 * Environmental audits – Participate in environmental audits and support the development of improvement action plans.
 * Communications – Contribute to internal sustainability communications, including presentations and reports.
 * Data analysis – Assist in collecting and analysing energy data usage.
 * Project ideas – Create ideas for engineering projects and present financial cost and benefits.
Research
 * Research and benchmarking to compare UMG's performance against industry peers.
 * Conduct research on emerging ESG trends, regulations, and best practices.
 * Research innovative technologies and best practices in energy management and decarbonisation.
Legislation/Quality Assurance Requirements
 * Assist in compliance with sustainability legislation, in particular the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) in the UK and Net Zero planning.
 * Support individual business units in compliance with relevant ESG legislation/Quality Assurance requirements.
Company Engagement
 * Driving ESG awareness across UMG.
Experience
Experience - Essential
 * Completed two years of study in a relevant degree.
 * High degree of literacy, numeracy, and interpersonal skills.
 * Able to produce and deliver presentations confidently.
 * Computer skills in word processing, graphics, web searching, Excel data handling, interpretation and presentation.
 * Familiarity with SharePoint would be an advantage.
 * Excellent communicator, both written and verbal English.
 * Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
 * Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and eager to learn.
Experience - Desirable
 * Demonstrated interest or coursework in sustainability, ESG, or environmental systems.
 * Familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, TCFD, CDP).
 * Knowledge of ISO 14001 or other sustainability standards.
 * Experience with sourcing and presenting quotations for projects.
