Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust
Locally Employed Doctor - Older Adult Mental Health
Closing date: 22 February 2026
There are 2 posts available, 1 is working within an older adult mental health unit and the other is working in a community hospital. The job description is valid for both posts but please note that the post within the community hospital is more physical health based and would be a medicine post rather than psychiatry and would be reporting to a general medic and not a psychiatrist.
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a 12‑month fixed‑term, full‑time, Locally Employed Doctor to join the inpatient team at New Haven older adult mental health unit, Bromsgrove. New Haven has 2 wards, Meadow Ward – a 12‑bed ward providing acute assessment and treatment services for people living with dementia – and Woodland Ward – an 18‑bed ward providing acute assessment and treatment services for people with a functional mental health condition.
There are 2 Consultant Psychiatrists as well as Resident Doctor support.
There is robust MDT at New Haven comprising Ward Managers, Deputy Ward Managers, Nurses, Nurse Associates, Health Care Support Workers, Health Care Assistants, OT Lead, OT Assistants, a Physiotherapist, and an Administrator.
Meadow Ward boasts a purpose‑built dementia garden (Meadow Green) which was named the Outdoor Space of the Year at the 2024 Design in Mental Health Awards.
The role also provides clinical assessments as part of our community hospital liaison team who support patients within our community hospitals.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide clinical assessment and formulation of treatment plans, and liaison with the referrer (as appropriate) under supervision of a consultant psychiatrist. This includes psychiatric evaluations, risk assessments, mental state examinations and prescription of appropriate treatments in line with NICE guidance. Work is undertaken with the multidisciplinary team and includes both routine, urgent and emergency referrals.
Provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress and discharge letters using Trust IT and clinical records system training will be provided where needed.
In addition to New Haven the candidate will provide clinical assessments as part of the Community Hospital Liaison team. The team consists of ACPs. The senior medical cover for this role is provided by the respective area community OA consultant. The candidate is expected to have flexibility in splitting time between two roles in agreement with the Woodland Ward consultant supervisor.
Active commitment to delivering the Trust’s clinical governance agenda.
This post does not carry out‑of‑hours on‑call responsibilities.
This is a fixed‑term post to provide cover for absence for a specific purpose that we anticipate will be required for 12 months. We reserve the right to end this contract sooner with appropriate notice.
