Overview
We are looking to appoint a consultant in Medical Oncology with a special interest in the medical management of Upper GI malignancies. The successful candidate will work with existing Medical and Clinical Oncology colleagues, clinical nurse specialists, nurse and pharmacist prescribers, as well as other members of the multidisciplinary teams across these tumour sites.
The post-holder will primarily be based at Churchill Hospital, Oxford and the Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust, with willingness to work in any of the Trust's locations or outreach district general hospital clinics, including Horton Hospital (Banbury), Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Wycombe Hospital, Great Western Hospital (Swindon), Milton Keynes Hospital, and others. Each 4‑hour clinic typically includes 2 new and 8 follow‑up patients; a full‑time post holder will see approximately 250‑300 new patients over a 42‑week year.
Responsibilities
* Provide medical management of Upper GI malignancies, prescribing and delivering chemotherapy and radiotherapy through the Trust's diagnostic and treatment facilities.
* Attend and conduct 4‑hour clinics, seeing 250‑300 new patients per year.
* Mentor and supervise junior doctors and clinical students, and be involved in teaching programmes and clinical examinations.
* Act as Educational Supervisor within the department.
* Participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, risk management, quality improvement and external accreditation.
* Maintain up‑to‑date clinical knowledge and demonstrate competence to the Trust.
* Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and departmental management under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
* Fulfil a Deputy Leadership role to gain insight into departmental and Trust governance processes.
Required Qualifications
* MB ChB or equivalent.
* MRCP or equivalent.
* CCT in Medical Oncology; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
* Full GMC Registration.
Desirable Criteria
* Higher Medical / Research degree.
* General training in Medical Oncology to specialist level or equivalent.
* General training in all aspects of medical oncology and tumour sites.
* Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level.
* Research / Clinical trial experience, publications or presentations.
* Upper GI experience.
* Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills sufficient to effectively undertake the role of consultant.
* Good written English with highly developed communication skills.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees.
* Evidence of effective participation in clinical audit and risk management.
* ICH GCP training within last 12 months and active involvement in clinical research trials.
* Management training and experience.
* Knowledge of NHS organisation and the Government's agenda for its modernisation.
* Computing skills: ability to use word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser.
* Publication of research.
* Driving licence.
* Appropriate UK professional registration.
