Job Description
For 25 years, Kestrel has been producing original theatre, film, and performance works with individuals experienced in the criminal justice system. We utilize industry professionals to support and develop these projects. Our work includes engaging with prisons such as Pentonville, Downview, Five Wells, Bullingdon, Elmley, Swaleside, Aylesbury, Springhill, and Grendon, as well as public performances at venues like London’s Diorama Theatre and Garsington Opera Studios. We also support our alumni post-release as a core part of our mission.
Position
We are seeking a new Artistic Director for a part-time role (85 days per year) with a basic annual salary of £20,000, plus additional earnings from individual projects. Details are available on our website: Kestrel Theatre Company. Learn about our work and initiatives on our site.
Job Requirements
The previous Artistic Director, El Henderson, has led innovative programs across various prisons and public venues. We seek someone with experience in leading creative projects, proven development and coordination skills, and a passion for our mission to continue this pioneering work.
Responsibilities
1. Reporting to the Chair and Board of Trustees, develop and manage an annual program of events, expanding the Kestrel offerings.
2. Coordinate with practitioners to ensure all projects are properly staffed.
3. Represent Kestrel at events, seminars, and in discussions with donors and prison authorities.
4. Build and maintain collaborations with partner organizations.
5. Manage project budgets and funding in line with financial plans.
6. Recruit and train new practitioners for Kestrel programs.
7. Ensure staff are familiar with Kestrel’s methodology and prison working procedures.
8. Oversee communications, including the website and newsletter.
