We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our Highways Development Management Team as a Principal Engineer, supporting growth and regeneration across the district.
We are looking for an enthusiasticand proactive Principal Highways Development Management Engineer to lead and inspire our team, championing safe, accessible, and sustainable design within new developments. This role is central to ensuring that planning proposals meet local and national standards, supporting our wider Planning and Regeneration ambitions, and helping deliver a resilient highways network for our communities.
Key Responsibilities
As the Principal Highways Development Management Engineer, you will:
* Lead and Develop a Team:Provide leadership, guidance, and support to a team of Development Management engineers, nurturing professional growth and ensuring consistent high‑quality service delivery.
* Assess Development Proposals:Review, analyse, and influence planning applications to ensure compliance with highways policy, design standards, and sustainable transport principles.
* Engage with Stakeholders:Work collaboratively with planners, developers, councillors, and other stakeholders, offering expert advice to help shape well‑designed, future‑ready developments.
* Represent the Service:Attend Planning Committees and key meetings, presenting technical assessments clearly and confidently, and supporting informed decision‑making.
* Champion Best Practice:Promote robust design standards and drive continuous improvement in the way we evaluate and manage development impacts on the highway network.
* Collaborate Across Teams:Work closely with Strategic Planning, Transport, and Regeneration colleagues to ensure development aligns with wider policy goals and long‑term infrastructure planning.

This role is based within our city centre offices during an exciting period of growth and redevelopment. As part of the wider Regeneration and Economic Growth directorate, you will contribute to shaping transformational projects across the district.
