Here at the Westmorland Family, we make all our food ourselves from fresh local ingredients, including beef and lamb from our own farm at Tebay and carefully selected local suppliers to ensure the highest quality ingredients.
Our Cookery School apprenticeship course is a full-time paid position, including a day a week at Kendal College and four days a week in our Westmorland Hotel working alongside the Head Chef and Kitchen team to practice your new skills.
We also include time spent in our Northern sites, both on the farm, in the butchery, and at our Production Kitchen at Rheged.
Following our specifications, you will ensure that the food is cooked and presented appropriately in accordance with demand, ensuring only the highest quality products are offered to our customers.
Responsible for the smooth running of the kitchen, you will also need to maintain a clean, tidy, and safe kitchen with the highest levels of food safety to maintain our 5-star rating, including completing all necessary paperwork.

About Us
At Westmorland, we are a family business that started in 1972 from our farm in Cumbria, which runs unique motorway service areas – Tebay, Gloucester, and Cairn Lodge – based on no franchises but instead our own farmshops and kitchens. We also have Junction 38, a service dedicated to HGV drivers; Rheged, a meeting place, cafe, gallery, and cinema; and the Westmorland Hotel situated on the edge of the Lake District.
We are proud to be connected to our place and that our family of colleagues share our values of warmth, grit, and courage. If you join our family, it will be hard work at times, but we offer a great range of benefits, including generous discounts in our farmshops and kitchens, free meals when working on shift, generous holiday entitlements, a paid day off for your birthday, and more.
If you work at our Tebay or Gloucester sites, we are able to offer free or discounted travel to help you get to and from work (restrictions may apply).
