Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) brings an advanced Critical Care Team to the most seriously ill and injured patients across the region, delivered as a partnership between HIOWAA Charity and University Hospital Southampton. We are expanding our team of Critical Care Paramedics and seeking experienced clinicians committed to providing the highest standards of clinical care in challenging pre-hospital circumstances. Initially based at our airbase in Thruxton, but at Southampton Airport from February 2026, the role is varied and developmental, requiring clinicians to be great team members focused on outstanding patient care.
Job responsibilities
* Deliver specialised clinical practice within pre-hospital emergency care and act as a role model within the Critical Care Team.
* Practice as a solo Specialist Paramedic responder or in partnership with a HEMS doctor to deliver enhanced care to high-acuity patients in the out-of-hospital setting.
* Use collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical care for patients attended by the Critical Care Team.
* Work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver clinical practice, clinical leadership, supervision, support, structured teaching and mentorship for multidisciplinary professionals.
* Support service development, including multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, incorporating current best evidence in consultation with medical and Allied Health Professionals for pre-hospital care.
* Continue professional development with work-based and service-provided training.
* Engage with stakeholders involved with the HEMS Care Group to drive improvement, education and clinical governance.
* Collaborate with colleagues from local ambulance services and the HIOWAA charity to foster partnership and deliver high-quality services.
Person specification – Qualifications, knowledge and experience
* Very experienced blue light driver with UK Driving Licence (no more than 3 penalty points). Level 3 CERAD Emergency Driving Qualification (or IHCD Emergency Driving qualification with willingness to undertake additional training).
* Significant experience in pre-hospital emergency care. Registered paramedic (HCPC) with no restrictions on practice. Postgraduate PGCert/PGDip/MSc in Advanced Clinical/Paramedic Practice or similar Level 7 study.
* Ability to listen to others, appreciate different opinions, and adapt to environments and situations responsibly.
* Demonstrable on-scene and multi-agency management of busy, complex situations and ability to bring out the best in those involved.
* Ability to take responsibility and be a role model for others; capable of leading as part of a multi-disciplinary team with clear direction on scene and within team dynamics.
* Ability to dynamically risk assess and respond to unpredictable clinical incidents and provide concise feedback during case discussions and debriefs.
* Participation in Audit or Quality Improvement activities.
* Demonstrable team membership and the ability to work in a high-performing pre-hospital environment. Competence in NVIS/NVG for night-time operations, as required.
* Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure; clear, direct, and respectful communication; self-management with prompt shift starts and focus on team impact.
