We are seeking an experienced Principal Planner to take a leading role in the delivery of complex and high-value planning projects. This is an exciting opportunity to manage your own caseload-particularly large-scale residential schemes-while shaping the strategic direction of client work, mentoring junior colleagues, and contributing to overall business development.\n\nAs a key member of our team, you'll act as a brand ambassador, help build lasting client relationships, and contribute directly to company growth through high-quality project delivery and thought leadership in planning practice.\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\nIndependently manage a portfolio of major planning applications and appeals\nLead large-scale residential projects from inception to completion\nUndertake site assessments, strategic land identification, and promotion\nLiaise with local authorities, stakeholders, and third-party consultants\nAttend and present at appeal hearings and examinations in public\nCollaborate with architects, engineers, surveyors, and other professionals\nWrite comprehensive planning reports and supporting documents\nAnalyse complex data and evaluate evidence objectively\nEngage in negotiations to achieve optimal planning outcomes\nAttend public meetings and liaise with councillors and the wider community\nOffer ad-hoc advice to clients and assist colleagues with shared workloads\nProvide mentoring and support to junior team members\nMonitor budgets, prepare invoices, and manage project finances\nStay up to date with planning legislation and policy changesWhat We're Looking For\nEssential Skills & Experience:\n\n5-7 years' minimum professional experience (ideally in private consultancy or similar environment)\nProven experience managing complex planning projects, particularly residential schemes\nStrong knowledge of the UK planning system and legislation\nExcellent communication, negotiation, and client engagement skills\nProficiency in Microsoft Office and general IT systems\nHigh-quality report writing and analytical skills\nStrong time management and organisational abilities\nConfidence to work independently or within a team\nDetail-oriented, methodical, and able to meet tight deadlines\nFull clean UK driving licenceDesirable:\n\nUnderstanding of urban design and masterplanning\nAn existing client base or ability to generate new business is advantageousWhat We Offer\n\nCompetitive market salary\nFlexible working hours and remote/hybrid options\nMinimum 22 days holiday plus Bank Holidays\nAdditional Birthday Leave\nHealth insurance\nCompany pension scheme\nPaid membership of one professional body (others considered)\nDiscretionary leave over Christmas and New Year\nPotential for performance-related bonuses\nA friendly, close-knit, and supportive team culture with high staff retention\nOpportunities for continued progression and professional development
