Job Overview
We are looking for a Consultant with a specialist knee interest to join the Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) department at Weston General Hospital. The role is a replacement post in the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics with a full-time commitment of 10 days per annum, including a 1 in 8 weekend on‑call rota for adult trauma. Elective surgery will be conducted through the elective Knightstone Unit and general trauma on‑call support. The candidate will be responsible for day‑to‑day patient management, decision making, theatre planning, fracture clinic and trauma list running, ward rounds, resident supervision, and teaching.
Main Duties
* Weekly elective operating lists and elective clinics, including fixed weekend breaks (1 weekend in 8).
* Regular trauma lists and fracture/acute clinics; commitment to the Virtual Fracture Clinic.
* Ward rounds and resident doctor clinical supervision / on‑ward teaching.
* Compliance with Trust policies—triage timescales, discharge summaries, DNA management, and paperwork within agreed timescales.
* Collaboration with service managers and clinical colleagues to manage caseload, meet national and local priorities such as maximum waiting times, and maintain clinical, national and local standards.
* Utilisation of secretarial support and shared office space with other Orthopaedic Consultants.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Training
* Fully registered with GMC.
* CCT or equivalent certification (or CESR at interview).
* Candidates may be within 6 months of gaining CCT at date of interview (CESR not applicable).
* Must be on GMC specialist register to start appointment.
* Higher academic qualification (MD, PhD, or equivalent) preferred.
Experience
* Demonstrable surgical training and interest in knee surgery including arthroplasty and soft‑tissue knee surgery, plus general trauma surgery experience.
* First‑class professional practice in adult trauma and orthopaedics with evidence of sustained clinical skills.
* Fellowship‑level training in elective knee surgery.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Independent practice in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
* Independent practice on adult on‑call trauma rota.
* Consultant‑level clinical decision making.
* Broad IT proficiency.
* Experience in teaching.
Clinical Governance and Audit
* Understanding of clinical governance responsibilities.
