Overview

It’s a fantastic time to work for the Environment Agency as we step forward to tackle the climate emergency. Do you want to help make England a better place to live and work in?

Role context: As a member of the FCRM Improvements Portfolio team, you will support the Portfolio Management Office and sub-portfolio project and programme work delivering over £150m of improvements in the next three years. You will help inform changes we are delivering to enable outcomes that protect communities and businesses from flooding. The Improvements Portfolio provides professional portfolio, programme and project management services within the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) directorate, driving innovation and continuous improvement across FCRM and Incident Management.

You will start up and inform new projects, help assure live projects, support project managers, build relationships with the Portfolio Management Office, and help improve and embed portfolio management and data practices. This is a great role for someone with data analytics and/or project management skills who wishes to gain experience at programme/portfolio level. This role is not eligible for Skilled visa sponsorship.

Responding to incidents is a central and important part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role (usually virtual) and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and will include full training. Alternative working arrangements and full support will be available to enable you in your incident role.

Responsibilities

* Start up and inform new projects, support live projects, assist project managers, build relationships with the Portfolio Management Office and help improve and embed Portfolio management and data practices.
* Inform and support the delivery of projects and programmes within the Improvements Portfolio, contributing to outcomes that protect communities and businesses from flooding.
* Support incident response activities as part of the incident role, with training, potential additional payment, and flexible working arrangements.

Experience / Skills Required

* Formal project / programme management experience is essential.
* Highly numerate with data gathering, manipulation and interpretation skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Excel; experience of Power BI / Tableau or similar is desirable.
* Experience in a project support role in a complex organisation using Agile and waterfall methodologies.
* Administrative and organisational skills, supporting regular meetings, agendas and minutes for Portfolio governance cycles.
* Financial data management and project planning skills desirable.
* Able to gain credibility and cooperation across the business through collaborative behaviours.
* Experience in tackling and automating routine issues with a continuous improvement mindset.
* Ability to work with uncertainty and find innovative solutions.

Other notes: Please note, this role does NOT qualify for sponsorship. Applications from those wanting full, shared or part-time working arrangements are welcome. There is good opportunity for blended home and office working. Some travel and overnight stay may be required. The Environment Agency is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and to flexible working patterns. We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability who are seeking employment.
