Data Privacy Legal Counsel AVP – Barclays – Glasgow
Join us as a Data Privacy Legal Counsel AVP at Barclays. The Data Privacy Legal Team provides data privacy legal advice, support and risk management to the bank, supporting its business units, middle and back office, international and group functions, and liaising with legal colleagues across the bank.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide support and expert legal advice on data privacy and related matters with respect to: (i) data subject access requests; and (ii) international transfers of personal data.
Purpose of the role
To help ensure that the Cyber, Data, IP & Emerging Tech Legal activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities.
Responsibilities
* Develop and implement best‑practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
* Provide legal advice and support to the business on cybersecurity, data privacy, intellectual property (IP) and emerging tech matters, including incidents, IP protection and technology deployment.
* Represent the bank in legal proceedings related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech, such as litigation, arbitration and regulatory investigations.
* Create and review legal documents such as data protection policies, cybersecurity protocols, IP licenses and emerging tech policies to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
* Conduct legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank’s cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech practices.
* Develop and deliver training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech.
* Proactively identify, communicate and provide legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs); keep up to date with changes to LRRs and ensure they are effectively reflected in policies, standards and controls.
Qualifications
* Qualified lawyer with data privacy experience and an interest in developing expertise in this area.
* Experience gained in either private practice or in‑house.
* Ability to work independently and flexibly to identify risk and plan for change driven by evolving regulation.
* Experience with contracts, negotiations and drafting.
* Litigation experience.
Other Highly Valued Skills
* Financial Services experience (desirable but not essential).
* Data privacy expertise.
* Ability to adapt and be comfortable working across different levels of the organisation.
This role will be based in Glasgow.
