Our Principal Engineers drive projects from concept to completion, managing design teams and reviewing technical output. Responsibilities include financial management, strategic client engagement, and mentoring, underpinned by strong leadership, technical insight, and commercial judgment.
Responsibilities
* Strive to promote and adhere to AWA’s Culture points
* Preparation of reports, designs, specifications and contract documents for various project types
* Management of projects, both large and small, from inception through to completion
* Technically capable and willing to assist less experienced members of the team
* To technically review designs produced by others and verify completeness to technical and company standards
* Management of design teams
* Liaison with other engineers/technicians to ensure updates to technical standards are maintained and disseminated to the team
* Ensure that design briefs are completed satisfactorily
* Promote and incorporate sustainable design wherever possible
* Supervise the preparation of contract documents
* Operate the company management and admin system, quality control and document management in line with company policy
* Identify and meet effectively the requirements and expectations of clients
* Help to identify business opportunities
* Facilitate efficient and economic delivery of projects by less senior engineers and technicians
* Motivate other members of the team and wider community by providing coaching, training, mentoring and CPD delivery
* Assist in the production of fee estimates and bids
* Monitor and manage the financial health of project fees. Work within the fee of each project and assist others to do likewise
* Manage resources, costs and change control to ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget
* Expand relationships with clients whenever possible
* Financial management of projects from preparation of fee bids to monthly invoicing
Requirements
* Accredited honours degree or equivalent in Structural/Civil Engineering and a chartered member of either the Institution of Civil Engineers or Structural Engineers (MICE, IStructE)
* Competent in using Microsoft’s EXCEL, and Word and familiarity with Auto, Revit, NBS, TEDDS, TSD and/or Masterseries
* Have a strong customer focus
* Exceptional organisational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure
* Good specification and report writing skills
* Knowledge of Construction, Health and Safety Regulations, Building Regulations, and contract law.
* Commercially aware with a flexible attitude to both the type of work to be undertaken and the level of responsibility accepted
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Experience of working with D&B contractors, builders and architects
* Able to make decisions, act on own initiative and operate in a pro‑active way
* Financial awareness
* Good ability to build up and maintain client and team relationships
* Effective team worker, contributing to the team and wider objectives.
* Comfortable with attending meetings with clients and design teams
* Organise and prioritise your own time and tasks to enable the simultaneous running of several projects
* Be able to logically analyse problems from first principles to determine solutions
* Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to understand and express technical concepts clearly and accurately.
* Valid driver’s license and access to a personally owned vehicle, insured for business use.
