About the role

The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Cellular Pathology service is to become a leader in the field of Histopathology/Cytology management. The successful applicant must therefore have the requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to achieve these goals.


Key responsibilities

* Support the delivery of histopathology and cytopathology services, including contributing to the development of these services within the Trust.
* Maintain one or two subspecialist interests (preferably Gynae Colposcopy, MDT, medical liver, haematopathology and inflammatory skin).
* Participate in general diagnostic surgical pathology rota, with nominal responsibility for reporting one day in every seven and supervising the reporting of junior medical staff.
* Attend appropriate cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings as the lead or deputy pathologist.
* Engage in external quality assurance (EQA) schemes and relevant clinical audits.
* Report one sixth of the non‑gynecological cytology workload in association with three other consultants.
* Supervise registrars’ non‑Gynae cytology work on an equitable basis.


Essential qualifications and experience

* FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification.
* Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) – or eligibility for registration within six months of interview; CCT date within six months.
* Medical qualification with broad experience in diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent training and experience.
* Training and experience sufficient to practice as an independent consultant.
* Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice.
* Evidence of active involvement in audit.
* Good IT skills and proficiency in the use of patient and hospital databases.
* Able to organise oneself and prioritise clinical workload.
* Demonstrable interest in laboratory management and administration.


Desirable qualifications and experience

* Higher degree (e.g., PhD or MD).
* Commitment to new diagnostic techniques such as Molecular pathology and good knowledge of all aspects of general diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology.
* Commitment and experience in Digital Pathology and a track record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Evidence of providing good teaching and supervision to trainees to the level of GMC accredited educational supervision.
* Educational qualification.
* Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient workforce management.
* Excellent written and spoken English communication with clinical and other colleagues.
* Evidence of good multi‑disciplinary and multi‑professional team working.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
