BMS Estimating Engineer Location: Carshalton, Surrey Salary: £40,000 - £55,000 About the Role As an Estimator, you'll create accurate and detailed cost estimates and initial designs for smart building technology projects. You'll collaborate closely with internal technical teams, external consultants, and clients to ensure proposals are comprehensive, competitive, and tailored precisely to customer requirements. Project-Specific Responsibilities Cost Estimation: Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for smart building technology systems, including labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services. Project Assessment: Review project specifications, technical drawings, and documentation to fully understand project scope, identify key requirements, and inform accurate costing. Vendor Coordination: Source, review, and negotiate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with specifications. Proposal Development: Develop clear, comprehensive, and competitive bid proposals, addressing all client requirements effectively. Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with projects and propose practical strategies to mitigate these. Client Interaction: Engage proactively with clients to clarify project details, discuss estimates, and resolve any queries or concerns. Documentation: Maintain thorough and accurate records of estimates, bid proposals, revisions, and related correspondence. Collaboration & Support: Coordinate closely with project managers, design engineers, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure estimates align with project activities and variations. General Responsibilities Train and mentor staff at various levels within the business Contribute to the development of training documentation Stay up to date with industry developments and best practices Maintain professional competence through ongoing training Work responsibly within personal competencies and limitations Support colleagues in raising concerns around risks or malpractice Promote sustainable practices to minimise waste and environmental impact Qualifications & Experience Required Essential: Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in an estimation role within Building Management Systems (BMS) Desirable: Qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline Formal training or certification in estimation methodologies Experience Proven experience estimating complex technology projects (e.g. BEMS, lighting control, networking, AV, home automation) Strong ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications Experience in design, installation, or commissioning of smart building systems is advantageous Skills & Attributes Strong technical understanding of BMS, HVAC, AV, IT networks, and lighting controls High level of accuracy and attention to detail Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong negotiation skills with suppliers and subcontractors Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite Knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. BS7671, CIBSE guidelines) Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines Commitment to continuous professional development
