Mechanisms Engineer, Job Ref: 2122
The Mechanisms team at SSTL seeks an enthusiastic, success‑driven and committed mechanisms engineer to support the existing and expanding range of space mechanisms used on SSTL spacecraft. This is an amazing opportunity to work on space mechanisms in a stimulating, mission‑critical environment. The vacancy requires a high level of electro‑mechanical technical design, analysis, production and testing, coupled with the ability to manage multiple work packages. The role allows the engineer to work across multiple products and influence the product offerings to meet mission‑level requirements.
Mechanisms engineers face significant challenges during spacecraft launch and in orbit. They must ensure that delivered components operate reliably for potentially 15 years with no maintenance, delivering 100% reliability, and providing low‑cost innovative solutions designed for manufacture (DFM). SSTL has developed numerous space mechanisms and faces the challenge of upcoming satellite missions, requiring evolution of existing product lines and pioneering new mechanisms.
Key Tasks
* Design and analysis of new or evolved mechanism products, working with other business areas for system trade‑offs.
* Design for manufacture (DFM).
* Hands‑on engineering including development, flight build, testing and spacecraft integration.
* Managing multiple tasks and work packages in parallel with changing priorities.
* Interfacing with internal and external customers, including presentations and technical reviews.
* Authoring technical documents such as design reports, procedures and test reports.
Previous Experience
* Graduate with real passion for mechanical and/or mechanisms/mechatronics engineering, or an experienced engineer with mechanical/mechanism/mechatronic engineering experience, preferably in a high reliability environment.
* Mechanical design experience of stress‑critical components, precision tolerance analysis, drafting and materials and manufacturing methods.
* Awareness of electronics and software/firmware in an engineering environment and ability to assist electronics/software engineers with testing and debugging (electronics/software design for flight is handled by other teams).
* Salary reflects relevant experience.
Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
* MEng or BEng or equivalent in mechanical, mechatronic or similar engineering.
* Appreciation of Design for Manufacture (DFM).
* Self‑motivated, creative, high attention to detail and accountable.
* Practical ability.
* Ability to work autonomously or within project teams and as part of a “One Team” environment.
* Strong communication skills within the organisation and with customers and suppliers.
* Ability to work in a fast‑paced, pressured environment in an organised manner.
* Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
* Knowledge of components used in mechanisms.
* Knowledge of CAD and FEA software with design/idealisation intent.
* Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
* Demonstrates company mindsets and behaviours: accountability, drive & delivery, effective communication, self‑management, teamwork.
