Scrub Practitioner/Operating Department Practitioner – Fixed Term
We are looking for Scrub Practitioners or Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) to join our Bristol site on a fixed term basis until the end of March 2026. Full- or part‑time applications are welcome; applicants will be expected to work weekends on a rota basis.
Job Summary
Scrub Nurses are an integral part of our theatre teams and will undertake a variety of duties. You will set the theatre up, support the surgeon through the daily cataract surgery list, anticipate and resolve problems, and ensure the highest standards of patient safety, clinical compliance and hygiene. In addition to scrub duties you will manage medicines, audit tasks, accurate patient records and clinical waste disposal. You will also provide a friendly, empathetic bedside manner to help patients feel comfortable during surgery.
Responsibilities
* Set up and maintain a clean, efficient theatre environment for 18‑22 patients per day.
* Support surgeons through the daily theatre list, anticipating and resolving issues.
* Assist with medicine management, audit duties and accurate patient record keeping.
* Manage clinical waste and ensure correct disposal procedures.
* Help clean‑down theatre at the end of the day, maintaining safety and hygiene standards.
* Provide compassionate, patient‑centred care to alleviate anxiety during surgery.
Person Specification – Essential
* Fully qualified Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner with current NMC or HCPC registration.
* Ophthalmic theatre experience – ideally with vitrectomy and phaco instrumentation.
* Working knowledge of biometry, lens bank and implant selection.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑volume cataract surgery environment.
* Experience supporting surgeons with problem‑solving and issue resolution.
* Team‑player with strong verbal and written English communication skills.
* Computer literacy and competence with NHS electronic systems.
* Commitment to continuous professional development and willingness to coach others.
Person Specification – Advantageous
* Previous hospital eye service or private eye clinic experience.
* Knowledge of current developments in optometry and clinical practice.
* Experience in a high‑volume theatre setting.
* Desire for ongoing professional development.
