Job Description:
This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for someone interested in investigations and consumer protection to join Salford City Council’s expanding Regulatory Services team.
The service includes teams such as Trading Standards, Licensing, Environmental Health, Environmental Protection, and Private Sector Housing.
Did you know that the government is funding the recruitment and training of apprentice Trading Standards Officers to enforce regulations on cigarettes, tobacco, and vapes, as well as other trading standards duties?
The Trading Standards and Licensing team enforces regulations and promotes business compliance, consumer protection, and public safety across various areas including metrology, food standards, animal health, fair trading, product safety, and licensing for gambling, scrap metal, taxis, and private hire services.
Trading Standards already enforces strict rules on tobacco and vapes, and this will intensify. Last year, across the country, Trading Standards seized over a million illegal vapes, 20 million counterfeit cigarettes, and 7,183kg of illicit tobacco. New rules are upcoming, and this role will be key in ensuring compliance in Salford.
You will be an apprentice within the Trading Standards and Licensing team, assisting with complaints review, compliance checks, seizure of non-compliant goods, advising businesses, taking statements, interviewing traders, and criminal investigations. You will receive support and mentorship but will manage your own caseload with limited supervision.
We seek an enthusiastic, dedicated individual capable of quick learning, confident action, and clear communication, both verbally and in writing.
The role demands good organization, prioritization, sensitivity, confidentiality, and accurate record-keeping on electronic databases.
This position is fully funded by the Department of Health and Social Care for four years. You will focus on tackling illegal and underage sales, supporting businesses in compliance with tobacco and vape regulations designed to protect consumers, especially children, while working towards a Level 6 professional qualification, offering valuable development across Trading Standards and Licensing activities.
If you are committed to improving young people’s lives and align with our values of Pride, Passion, People, and Personal Responsibility, this is an exciting opportunity. For inquiries, contact Marsha Bell at [emailprotected].
Note: We will not consider candidates requiring sponsorship.
