Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic integrated Trust with integrity and vision, aiming to be the organisation of choice for patients and an employer of choice for staff. It is one of four ‘specialist’ hospital sites in Greater Manchester, specialising in general surgery, anaesthetics, critical care and emergency medicine for the benefit of people in Stockport, High Peak, Cheshire and across Greater Manchester. Medical Examiner Responsibilities
* Ensure compliance with the legal and procedural requirements associated with certification, investigation (by coroners) and registration of deaths within a Local Authority area.
* Support doctors who call for medical advice on suspected natural causes of death before they prepare an MCCD, and provide general medical advice to the coroner.
* Scrutinise the certified causes of all in‑scope deaths in a way that is compliant with the proposed national protocol.
* Maintain comprehensive records of all deaths scrutinised and undertake analysis, providing information as required to ONS and locally for clinical governance purposes.
* Explain to bereaved relatives causes of death in a transparent, tactful and sympathetic manner, respecting different faith, cultural, ethnic and diversity considerations.
* Support the training of junior doctors in completion of MCCDs and provide feedback on accuracy of certification locally.
* Ensure compliance with the Medical Examiner Regulations (2024).
Qualifications & Requirements
* A practising medical practitioner registered with the General Medical Council for a minimum of five years post‑registration.
* Consultant‑grade doctors from a range of disciplines (including GP principals) are recommended; medical examiners must not have been involved in the care of the deceased patients for deaths they scrutinise.
* Medical examiners must verify clinical information on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs) and ensure appropriate referrals to the coroner.
* A Standard DBS check (cost £26.90) is required, with the annual subscription fee for the DBS update service (£16) paid by the employee.
