The Floating Support Service is a locality-based service providing a supportive service to households in temporary accommodation who are homeless. The service offers a strengths-based approach to help households to stabilise their lives and to move forward positively into permanent rehousing.

Many of those accessing this service may have vulnerabilities or be experiencing hardship. They may have multiple complex support needs which can range from poor mental health and wellbeing, substance misuse, poverty, unemployment and domestic abuse in addition to their being homeless. The role holder will be empathetic, practical and outcome focused in leading a team of staff in delivering a holistic, strength-based service to all households.

The Intensive support team is a critical part of the service. It has been identified and acknowledged that newly placed households in dispersed temporary accommodation are at greater risk of becoming a failing tenancy if named face to face support is not currently provided at the outset of a tenancy. Existing cases are gradually transferred from the intensive workers to an appropriate support worker, when the 3-month intensive period ends.

Support Workers must have an awareness and understanding of homelessness and the impact this has on families and individuals. Homeless people can have multiple and complex needs and may be vulnerable. The role requires you to have personal resilience, a keen and committed desire to help and support people and a solution focused outlook. The role can be challenging and demanding as the work can include issues relating to loss of tenancy, debt, domestic violence, substance misuse, mental and physical health problems.

The role holder will have a good understanding of safeguarding. They will demonstrate excellent partnership working skills building and developing close working relationships with the voluntary sector, agencies, health partners and organisations.

* An understanding of homelessness legislation would be an advantage however this is not essential and full training will be provided.

In accordance with Home Office guidance, successful candidates must evidence their right to work in the UK before commencement of employment. This is not a role we consider to be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route based on Manchester City Council policy. Candidates are therefore encouraged to consider their own right to work options without the requirement for Manchester City Council sponsorship.
