Charity finance trustee - volunteer

London
The Squad Club
Charity
Posted: 9h ago
Offer description

The Squad Club is an impactful hyperlocal charity supporting young people and adults with learning disabilities. This is a period of growth and renewal and are looking for a Trustee with Charity Finance skills. Can you use your experience to make a real difference to our members?
What difference will you make?
By joining us as a Trustee, you will make a huge difference. We are a small charity doing amazing things with our more-than-amazing members.
Our members are at the centre of all we do, and as a Trustee you will see the direct impact of your volunteering; for our members, their families and the local Merton community.
We are now at a crucial stage in our 30 year history having expanded our staff team in the last year and are looking to build further. We are looking to deepen our Board with a wider range of skills and experiences.
As a Trustee, we will support you to understand our policies, practices and governing responsibilities. We are a friendly and fun, young and diverse Trustee Board.
Our members claim we are the friendliest club in London, and you will see this firsthand. You will learn new skills, meet new people, work as a team and have significant leadership opportunities.
What are we looking for?
You do not need to have any previous experience with those with learning disabilities, just an open mind and a positive attitude towards disability.
In this recruitment, we are particularly keen to hear from people with backgrounds in Charity Finance.
Here are some of the skills and knowledge we are looking for, but we do not expect candidates to have all of these;
Knowledge
* Strong understanding of charity finance, reporting requirements, and relevant regulations (e.g. Charity Commission guidance, SORP).
* Familiarity with financial management principles, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial controls.
* Knowledge of accounting practices and financial statements (e.g. balance sheets, income & expenditure).
* Awareness of the wider financial environment and potential risks affecting small charities.
* Understanding of the charity’s governing document, structure, and objectives.
Skills
* Ability to present financial information clearly and accessibly to non-finance board members.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills to assess financial health and risks.
* Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to reviewing financial documents.
* Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with staff, trustees, and external stakeholders.
* Strategic thinking to align financial planning with the charity’s goals.
* Competence in using accounting software, spreadsheets, and financial reporting tools.
Experience
* Experience in charity finance, accounting, or bookkeeping (qualified accountant desirable but not essential).
* Prior involvement in budgeting, cash flow management, or preparing management accounts.
* Experience working or volunteering in a charity or non-profit setting (preferable).
* Previous board or committee experience (desirable, but not required).
* Familiarity with fundraising, grant management, or restricted funds (helpful for charity context).
Please note we would welcome candidates working in these fields who are looking to support their professional development and gain Board experience.
What will you be doing?
The Squad Club is an impactful hyper-local charity based in Merton - and we are looking for some very special skills to help us in a crucial period of deepening and sustaining our work.
Please note we are open to someone who has not had Trustee experience before, and will help you understand the role and responsibilities.
What are we looking for?
* A motivated individual who would like to use their professional or other experience to contribute to and develop an ambitious growth strategy for a local charity.
* The Squad is overseen by a Board of Trustees with a wide set of skills and experience. We are a young and diverse Board.
* We ask trustees to dedicate around 8 - 10 hours every 6 weeks of remote work to support the running, strategy, management and governance of The Squad.
* We ask that trustees get involved with a variety of aspects of The Squad; from financial matters, governance, marketing, fundraising, strategy or line managing staff, as part of small working groups.
* Applicants should be comfortable working in a remote team and communicating via Zoom/Teams, email and telephone.
* The Squad club itself is based in Wimbledon, but we ask trustees to attend board meetings every 6 weeks on Zoom and to attend Thursday evening clubs 2 - 3 times per year.
And the best bit
* You will be welcomed and supported by the Trustee team. We are genuinely lovely and fun. You will develop skills, positive relationships and make a difference!
