A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Pilot (Any)) to serve as Qualified Flying Instructor at RAF- Cranwell/Barkston Heath on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 20 Apr 2026. The successful applicant will be responsible to OC 57 Squadron for: The flying instruction of Elementary Flying Training (EFT) trainees iaw the appropriate syllabi and any other flying duties as directed by OC 57 Sqn. The ground instruction of EFT trainees. This includes instruction relevant to flying training and general service training. Maintaining personal flying currency with regard to flying hours, staff continuation training, standardisation, QFI category, instrument rating and parachute/survival drills. Maintaining personal fitness to fly with regard to Permanent Joint Medical Employment Standard (PJMES) and, as appropriate, the RAF Fitness Test standard. Conducting the duties of Duty Pilot, Duty Ops Supervisor and Duty Senior Supervisor as directed. Supervising the progress, welfare and officer qualities of EFT trainees. Acting as mentor for nominated trainees, advising the chain of command of any significant issues arising and making appropriate records in personal files. Writing routine training reports as required by the syllabi and as directed. Undertaking duties associated with the Sqn war role or aid to the civil community. Performing Stn or Sqn additional and secondary duties as directed by OC 57 Sqn. Setting, by example, high personal and professional standards at all times, both on and off duty. Duty of Care. The Ministry of Defence has a legal obligation to care for the well-being of recruits and trainees within Phase 1 and 2 Training Establishments. The Commanding Officer of every training establishment is directly responsible and accountable for ensuring a pragmatic supervisory care regime is in place for recruits, trainees and other students, including those on holding appointments or awaiting training. As a QFI you will ensure that trainees under your command are provided with, and have access to, an appropriate military, pastoral and welfare regime that goes beyond the delivery of military or specialist training and includes aspects such as the inculcation of professional military ethos and mentoring of trainees by military staff. Health and Safety at Work. You will have responsibilities under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 and other associated regulations: To comply with all instructions and procedures installed to ensure safety at work, taking proper care of any equipment provided for your health, safety and welfare at work. To provide specialist advice as appropriate to your line manager in order to allow proper risk assessment to be made. To report all accidents, injuries and near-miss dangerous occurrences promptly to line management. Diversity and Inclusion (D&I). You will be expected to value the contributions of all personnel under your command, regardless of different backgrounds, and to challenge and deal swiftly and firmly with any form of intimidation, harassment, bullying or abuse as detailed in JSP 822, Vol 4: Care & Welfare in Initial Training. Air Safety (AS). As a QFI, you will have a responsibility to apply the highest possible standards of AS to all 3 FTS activities. You will be fully engaged with the 3 FTS AS Management System whilst being conversant with the 3 FTS AS Management Plan and the governing principles of the MAA. You will also have a responsibility to develop trainees’ knowledge of AS and its importance to Defence Aviation.
