Overview
Trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Our SuRNICC at Glan Clwyd Hospital is the largest Neonatal Unit in North Wales and the focal point of the network of newborn care across the region. The unit has 5 intensive care cots, 5 high-dependency cots and 9 special care cots. With a team of Neonatal Consultants, ANNPs, Nurses and AHPs, we care for sick and preterm infants above 26 weeks’ gestation from across North Wales and beyond. We also run the North Wales Neonatal Transport Service from Glan Clwyd, which the post holder will receive training for and undertake supervised transfers once the MSc in Advanced Practice has been completed. During this post, the post holder will study for a Masters Level (MSc Advanced Practice) at Salford University as a full-time course over 1 year and work clinically within the SuRNICC at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. They will obtain competencies specific to their area of practice, developed locally to meet service needs. A Consultant (Neonatologist) will supervise their clinical development; the post holder will also work with the wider team and be allocated an ANNP mentor.
Main duties / Responsibilities
This trainee post has a variable term, depending on acquisition of the required competencies for the established Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner role. It will not exceed 5 years from the start of academic training. It is expected that competencies will be completed within a 6 to 18-month period post awarding of the MSc Advanced Practice. Upon consolidation in line with the four pillars of advanced practice as outlined in the HEIW framework, the post holder will progress to Band 8a. They will report directly to the neonatal consultants and ANNPs and will be an expert in neonatal conditions, complex decision-making and clinical competencies for an expanded scope of practice. They will provide specialist neonatal advice to patients, carers and colleagues regarding diagnosis and treatment of complex neonatal conditions and will advise neonatal staff in baby care and treatment.

* Uses specialist knowledge and training to assess, plan and implement a comprehensive management plan under the direction of a supervising consultant.
* Recognises the deteriorating infant and takes appropriate actions.

* Performs specialist interventions such as newborn examination, non-medical prescribing (must be checked and countersigned by an ANNP or medical prescriber), vascular cannulation, PICC insertion, umbilical cannulation, LISA, intubation and supraglottic airway insertion, chest drain insertion, exchange transfusion, 12-lead ECG, X-ray ordering and interpretation, blood gas interpretation, cranial ultrasound, and related competencies. Separate NW Neonatal Transport competencies will be undertaken in this period. Maintains moving and handling safety and demonstrates expert hand/eye coordination for clinical procedures. Uses electronic resources and the electronic record system effectively.
Following completion of the MSc Advanced Practice, the post holder will develop skills to provide direct clinical care to infants and families requiring emergency and elective transfers under direct supervision of a Neonatal Consultant or established ANNP. They will work with referring units to stabilise babies for transfer and participate in transfers to access ongoing care.
