Job Summary

Band 5 MHST EMHP/CWP Practitioners work closely with young people, families, parents, carers, and staff in schools, playing an important role in how people experience our services. Band 5 Practitioners are expected to be kind, responsive, professional, informative, and contribute to the quality of services we provide.

* Keep the people using our services safe through sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments.
* Ensure the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence‑based policies and procedures.
* Ensure the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering, and working in partnership with people throughout the care planning process.
* Work as part of a multidisciplinary team that delivers seamless care in partnership with other teams and services.
* Work alongside more experienced mental health practitioners, other health professionals, and EMHP/CWP peers delivering a service to schools.
* Collaborate with the team to meet standards that the people using our services deserve.


Main Duties

Applicants must be a qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) or an equivalent qualification with experience of working with children and young people in mental health services or schools in the provision of individual and group treatments.

Brent Mental Health Support Team is looking for a qualified EMHP with experience in delivering individual and group treatments in school settings. Enthusiastic and dynamic practitioners who are creative in their approach and passionate about improving health outcomes for children and young people will be welcomed.

You will work alongside EMHPs, Mental Health Practitioners, and Senior Clinical Leads to support the wellbeing and mental health of children and young people based in participating schools in Brent.

Brent MHST works with children and young people with mild to moderate mental health presentations attending schools in the area. CNWL is committed to supporting staff with career development and training, and ensuring staff health, wellbeing, and job satisfaction.

Key Deliverables

* Deliver low‑intensity evidence‑based interventions for children and young people in educational settings with mild to moderate mental health problems.
* Help children and young people with more severe problems to access more specialist services quickly.
* Support and facilitate staff in educational settings to identify and manage mental health and wellbeing issues where appropriate.
* Work with and within educational environments to provide better access to specialist mental health services.
* Implement group/whole‑school approaches and consult on referrals.
* Use acquired skills, knowledge, and abilities to deliver a service that builds on and reinforces existing initiatives within educational settings.

Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* Qualified Education Mental Health Practitioner or equivalent (e.g., CYP Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker with additional CBT qualification).


Desirable Qualifications

* A further relevant degree qualification.
* A teaching qualification.


Essential Experience

* Experience working with children and young people, families, and other stakeholders in a healthcare or school setting.
* Experience liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders.
* Experience working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.
* Experience with anxiety disorders.
* Experience with affective disorders.
* Experience delivering specific low‑intensity therapeutic interventions to children, young people or their families (e.g., CBT, solution‑focused brief therapy).
* Ability to conduct other group therapeutic interventions with children and their families.


Desirable Experience

* Experience working with children and families in an educational setting.
* Experience monitoring and recording outcome measures for children's emotional wellbeing.
* Experience navigating complex social systems and environments with conflicting priorities.
* Experience with looked‑after children.
* Experience with other vulnerable groups.


Essential Skills

* Effective communication with team members, young people, and others, including verbal, written, and telephone skills.
* Maintaining accurate, timely, concise, and legible clinical records (electronic and handwritten).
* Planning: assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of care plans.
* Understanding the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
* Understanding the concept of quality and role in improving safety, clinical outcomes, and patient experience.
* Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health interventions with children and families.
* Ability to assess risk and to record and communicate it appropriately.
* Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness among staff.


Desirable Skills

* Ability to teach others about mental health issues.


Essential Knowledge

* Knowledge of educational environments.
* Knowledge of safeguarding issues.
* Knowledge of capacity and consent issues, including Gillick competence.


Desirable Knowledge

* Knowledge of the functional operation of specialist CAMHS teams.

* Compassion and genuine care for service users, families, and carers.
* Respectful of others and able to treat them as they'd wish to be treated.
