Principal Clinical Scientist

Are you looking for a role with increased responsibility? There is a vacancy for a Principal Clinical Scientist based in the Radiotherapy Physics Department at the Royal Preston Hospital.
You will join an enthusiastic and friendly team of 17 clinical scientists, 12 dosimetrists, 8 engineers, and a quality manager. In addition, we currently have 3 STP trainees and are actively recruiting apprentice engineers into our team.
You will already be HCPC registered as a clinical scientist and have, or be close to gaining, Medical Physics Expert certification.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled, and motivated clinical scientist to join our multidisciplinary team at the Rosemere Cancer Centre radiotherapy department. You will work in the Imaging and Clinical Computing section and act as a Medical Physics Expert within the broader radiotherapy department.
This is a unique opportunity for an individual with a strong background in clinical computing and data analysis to support management of a wide range of radiotherapy systems, including treatment planning systems (Pinnacle, Raystation, Monaco), oncology management system (Mosaiq), quality control systems (Suncheck, QAtrack+), treatment delivery and support systems (Limbus, ProKnow, SGRT, XVI). The successful applicant will collaborate with the Trust IT department to ensure effective system and data governance, ensuring the safe delivery of state-of-the-art radiotherapy.
You will integrate data generated from multiple systems to provide solutions supporting decision-making, including in a-priori treatment planning and adaptive radiotherapy, with a focus on evaluating clinical outcomes. You will also use data to inform and optimize quality assurance practices, ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of care.
About us
Rosemere Cancer Centre is located on the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Royal Preston Hospital site and provides external beam radiotherapy for the adult population of Lancashire and South Cumbria (1.6 million people). The centre features:
* Eight clinical Elekta linacs (including two Harmony Pro linacs), all equipped with Vision RT surface-guided technology, CBCT, flattening filter-free treatment capability, and Response ABC system.
* Two dedicated Philips Big Bore CT scanners with Vision RT surface-guided technology.
* MOSAIQ and SYNERGISTIQ(TM).
* Treatment planning primarily on Pinnacle, with some on Raystation.
* Independent VMAT plan verification using Sun Nuclear DoseCHECK.
* Provision of SABR for primary lung tumours and oligometastases, including non-spine and spine, lung, liver, and adrenal, as well as intracranial SRS.
* Implementation of Monaco treatment planning system to replace Pinnacle.
* Evaluation of Sun Nuclear PerFRACTION for pre-treatment and in vivo QA.
* Rollout of Vision RT surface-guided technology across all sites, enabling tattoo-less radiotherapy for selected cases.
* Implementation of Elekta ONE Smart View.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* State Registered Clinical Scientist
* Honours degree in a physical science
* Postgraduate Degree (e.g., Masters or higher)
* Registered as a MPE with RPA 2000
* Full membership of IPEM or an equivalent professional body
* PhD or equivalent research training
Knowledge & Experience
* Experience to act as a Medical Physics Expert in radiotherapy
* Expert knowledge in radiotherapy physics
* Experience with planning/implementation of new facilities/techniques/equipment
* Knowledge of data analysis software
* Understanding of quality management systems and health and safety legislation
* Experience supervising students and trainees
* Experience with research and clinical governance
