Offer description

Teaching Assistant for Challenging Behaviour - Primary Special School - Slough Are you experienced in working with children who have challenging behaviour? Do you thrive in high-impact environments where no two days are the same? We are looking for a Teaching Assistant to join a Primary Special School in Slough that supports children with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), autism, and complex behavioural profiles. This school functions similarly to a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) - offering highly specialised, therapeutic education to pupils who've struggled in mainstream settings. Whether your background is in schools, youth work, mentoring, residential care, or youth offending teams, if you've worked with children who are difficult to reach, this could be the perfect fit. What You'll Be Doing as a Teaching Assistant: Supporting pupils aged 5-11 who display challenging behaviour and may have diagnoses such as ASD, ADHD, or have experienced trauma. Working one-to-one or in small groups, building consistent, trusting relationships with pupils who often struggle with emotional regulation and authority. Assisting the class teacher with behaviour management, learning activities, and daily routines. Encouraging social and emotional development through structured support and positive reinforcement. Using de-escalation strategies and a trauma-informed approach to maintain a safe and inclusive environment. What We're Looking For in a Teaching Assistant: Essential : Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, in a school or youth-focused setting. Backgrounds we love: Youth work, residential care, alternative provisions, SEMH schools, mentoring, youth justice, or sports coaching with vulnerable children. Strong communication skills, patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. A genuine passion for working with children who require extra emotional and behavioural support. Full-time availability, Monday to Friday (term-time), 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Why Work at This Slough Special School? High-Impact Environment : Make a tangible difference in the lives of pupils who have been let down by previous settings. Tight-Knit Team : Join a supportive, experienced staff who care deeply about their students and each other. Professional Growth : Access to free training including Behaviour Management, Autism Awareness, and Trauma-Informed Practices. No Two Days the Same : Work in a fast-paced, emotionally rewarding environment where your role truly matters. What We Offer: PAYE pay - no umbrella company deductions or hidden fees. Access to over 400 free training courses, including specialist SEN and SEMH development. Trial days available - come see the school for yourself before committing. Ongoing support from a consultant who understands the demands and rewards of this type of school. If you're an experienced Teaching Assistant in Slough, or someone with a background supporting vulnerable young people, and you're passionate about making a difference for children with challenging behaviour, this role could be your next step. As a specialist SEND recruiter, child safety and welfare is our number one priority. That is why we conduct thorough checks on all our candidates, and ensure that they abide by our Candidate Code of Conduct. All Candidates will be required to provide an Enhanced DBS that is actively registered on the Update Service, or apply for one as part of the onboarding process. This is in addition to other mandatory compliance checks in line with the DfE guidelines. For further information please see our Safer Recruitment Policy. SENDhelp is an equal opportunities employer.
