Senior Software Development Engineer – Developer Experience
Location: Nottingham Trent House, 95002, United Kingdom, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
Are you an engineer who loves making things work better for other engineers? Do you care about efficiency and continuous improvement? Join our team and help us redefine the way software is delivered at Capital One.
In this role, you aren’t just writing code or managing infrastructure; you are a force‑multiplier for our engineering teams. You will sit at the intersection of software engineering and community advocacy, spending your time on code that powers software delivery while also gathering feedback from our UK Tech organisation and sharing good engineering practices across the business.
What you’ll do
* Support and enhance the adoption and enablement of continuously evolving software delivery lifecycle platforms.
* Operate beyond the IDE – continuously strive for the right solutions to our customers’ problems, not just build tools and features.
* Deliver core engineering features and improvements that engineers in the UK and US consume on a daily basis.
* Provide continued support, maintenance and development of our core systems, enhancing our internal customers’ journeys toward CI/CD.
* Enhance our AWS deployment and validation mechanisms.
* Build relationships and influence with platform‑owning teams to support prioritisation and inner‑sourcing opportunities.
* Partner with Capital One teams in the US to innersource contributions to internal developer tools.
* Operate as a Developer Advocate, building a network of connections across engineering to identify friction and improve the developer experience.
What we’re looking for
* Great communicator who can talk to customers, share ideas, teach and lead among peers.
* Happy working across a variety of technologies and platforms, identifying and solving complex problems across the stack.
* Passionate about improving every developer’s experience.
* Analytical mindset with a focus on delivering value for the organisation and customers inline with stakeholder expectations.
* Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code and CI/CD concepts.
* Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Java or TypeScript.
* Solid understanding of Amazon Web Services (AWS) or an alternative cloud platform.
* Stickler for efficiency and effectiveness.
Where and how you'll work
This is a permanent position based in our Nottingham office. We have a hybrid working model that offers flexibility to work from our offices and from home. You’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
What’s in it for you
* Contribute to the product roadmap for an organisation committed to transformation.
* Work on cloud migration and solve scale, security, availability and performance challenges.
* Enjoy 10% of your time for cutting‑edge projects that shape future work practices.
* Benefit from strong career‑progression opportunities, training programmes and external providers.
* Access core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement, private medical insurance and flexible benefits such as season‑ticket loans, cycle‑to‑work scheme and enhanced parental leave.
* Work in open‑plan spaces with facilities such as gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms in Nottingham (and similar perks in London).
Capital One is committed to diversity in the workplace. Any application of this position is in accordance with applicable laws and equal‑employment‑opportunity standards.
