Job overview

As an MTI equivalent international medical graduate with interest in acute and chronic pain, you will be expected to participate in acute pain ward rounds, chronic pain clinics and participate in pain procedural lists. You will also be expected to provide anaesthesia for a wide range of specialties, including obstetrics, under supervision. You will also be expected to support the resuscitation and ongoing support of critically ill patients on our ICU. To this end you must have proof of having achieved the IAC and the Primary FRCA exam, or equivalent and have at least 3 months experience in ITU. You will also be expected to partake in the resident doctor on call rota.

At all times you will receive supervision from our consultant body. You are expected to seek advice and support, as appropriate. We provide excellent teaching and training opportunities as demonstrated by our high ranking in the GMC training survey. You will be afforded timetabled educational development time and supported to complete quality improvement projects and participate in clinical governance. You will be appointed an educational supervisor throughout your placement with us, and supported to take any further exams you wish to whilst in the UK.

The candidate must demonstrate professionalism at all times and maintain a patient first approach.

Main duties of the job

Maintain a high standard of clinical work.
Responsible for the safe provision of anaesthetic services,with a particular emphasis on acute and chronic pain services. You will also be involved in the acute and ongoing management of patients requiring intensive care treatment under consultant supervision.
Ensure compliance with our
clinical governance framework, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.
Participate in the resident on call rotas
Attend and contribute to the departmental teaching program
Consider completing a quality improvement project whilst in the placement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to provide anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialities, both elective and emergency, with Consultant Supervision.

Consultant supervision is mandatory, however, depending on the nature of the work may be immediate, local or distant supervision. Obstetric and ITU sessions are also expected and will be detailed in job plan. Participation in the ITU handovers and day-to-day ITU work, including assessing and resuscitation and stabiisation of unwell patients, both adults and children under the supervision of the Consultant Intensivist.

This role is specifically aimed at IMG’s with an interest in pain. Regular attendance at Acute pain ward rounds, Chronic Pain Clinics and Procedural Pain lists is expected.

On Call Commitment: The MTI doctors form an important role within our department working as part of our Resident Doctor on call team. It is anticipated that the MTI will rotate across all specialities (CEPOD, Obstetrics and ITU) All of our rotas are a 1:8 – 1:10. The rota is EWTD compliant and incorporates regular Educational development time sessions.

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

The succesful applicant must complete mandatory training updates, as required. It is expected that the applicant will achieve the IACOA during their placement

The applicant is expected to maintain a logbook and record their learning on the RCOA Lifelong Learning Platform. We have a comprehensive in-house teaching programme, including SIM sessions, in place. All resident doctors are expected to contribute and attend the sessions. We encourage our residents to participate in Audits, Quality improvement projects, M+M meetings, Research and Clinical Governance. The postholder must participate in the Trust’s appraisal process.

Essential criteria

1. •Basic medical degree
2. •Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
3. •Primary FRCA or equivalent
4. •IELTS / OET pass (>7.0 in each; 7.5 Overall or Minimum B in each area)
5. •IAC achieved with evidence on the RCOA Life-long learning platform
6. •ALS Certificate from UK Resus Council or Equivalent
