Consultant in General Medicine

We are inviting applications for Consultant in General Medicine at UHNM. You will provide expert patient care across our acute general medical wards at Royal Stoke (Wards 120 & 79) and County Hospital (Ward 14). Work includes a 1:3 weekend rota and 1:48 overnight on‑call on the GIM rota.
Main duties of the job
* Attend daily board rounds and morning consultant ward rounds on each ward.
* Allocate afternoon time for meeting relatives, multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) or reviewing newly admitted patients.
* Collaborate with local managers and professional colleagues in efficient service delivery and contribute to medical management.
* Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures, and standing orders.
* Maintain adequate arrangements for hospital staff to contact you when necessary.
* Maintain and improve clinical governance, risk management and audit processes.
* Co‑operate with the Trust to provide training, mentorship and appraisal support for professional development.
* Ensure infection control and data protection standards are upheld.
Responsibilities
* Provision of cover, daily board rounds on medicine escalation ward and medical patients outlying.
* Ongoing responsibility for patients under your care.
* Maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
* Professional supervision and development of trainee/locum doctors within escalation or medical outliers.
* Communicate with general practitioners and external agencies.
* Maintain own clinical competence and undertake continuing professional development.
Qualifications
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview or CESR).
* PG Certificate in Medical Education.
Management and Administrative Experience
* Organise and prioritise workload effectively.
* Documented contribution to substantial departmental development.
* Strategic planning and sound judgement amid conflicting pressures.
* Motivate and develop the multidisciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
* Leadership skills.
* Proficiency with information and technology.
* Experience and qualification in teaching.

Knowledge
* Clinical training and experience compatible with CCT in GIM.
* Expert clinical opinion across range of problems within the specialty.
* Independent responsibility for patient care.
* Attendance at MDT meetings.
* Track record in clinical governance and learning from errors.
* Awareness of current specialty-specific developments, initiatives and issues.
* Training in research methodology and original research experience.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals within the last 5 years.
* Research experience.
* Critical care experience.
* Higher teaching qualification.
