Responsible to:
1. The Head Teacher
2. The Inclusion Manager (overall line management)
3. Class Teachers (day to day direction and input)
Main Purpose:
4. To work with individual pupils or small groups.
5. To provide support for/extension to learning for pupils.
6. To provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.
7. To supervise physical, personal and general care of pupils, including those with SEN.
Main Responsibilities
SUPPORT FOR PUPILS
8. Attend to pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters including medical procedures following appropriate training
9. Supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning
10. Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs
11. Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
12. Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
13. Encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate
SUPPORT FOR THE TEACHER/LINE MANAGER
14. Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards and assist with the display of pupils work
15. Be aware of pupil problems, progress and achievements and report to the teacher as agreed
16. Undertake pupil record keeping as requested
17. Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate
18. Gather and report information from and to parents or carers as directed
19. Provide basic clerical and administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.
Qualifications:
20. GCSE English and Maths Grade C (or above) or equivalent
21. Evidence of additional related qualifications would be advantageous e.g. NVQ in children’s care, learning and development
22. Paediatric First Aid Qualification
23. Willingness to participate in development and training opportunities
Experience and skills:
24. Previous Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant experience
25. Working with or caring for children of relevant age
26. Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
27. Ability to judge when advice/assistance is needed to meet pupils/adults needs
28. Ability to react calmly and quickly in an emergency
29. An understanding of and a commitment to the need for confidentiality
30. Basic knowledge of first aid
31. Ability to use basic technology – computer, video, photocopier etc.
32. Ability to relate well to children and to adults
33. Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities and your own position within these
