Job description

This role is within Mortgages CIO function under CT(Customer Technology), part of the wider COO organisation, which is responsible for delivering IT solutions which have our customers and colleagues at heart.

You will be accountable for delivery of the agreed roadmap that supports our Integration and Migration Strategy. You will work closely with Data integration lead, data analysts and Technology Lead to provide leadership and support to our Engineering teams.

As a Data Engineer, you will ensure our systems and platforms are designed, developed and tested in a resilient and secure manner, aligned to strategy, ensuring we're applying good engineering practices and principals. You will play a key role in integrating data from multiple sources and transforming it into meaningful MI outputs - primarily through the development of intuitive, insightful dashboards. Your contributions will ensure consistent, accurate, and timely reporting across the Mortgages Data Estate, enabling data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency. This role is within The Mortgages CIO function. Mortgages are primarily provided via brokers, through our online and API channel. We are actively expanding our propositions in both Home and Landlord space as part of integration.

This role will drive a culture of continuous improvement, with a focus on building technical capability (including people) across all disciplines. Across CT, we have an important journey ahead of us to build and maintain our position in the market and respond to changing customer needs, guided by the strategic pillars of More Rewarding Relationship, Simply Brilliant Service and Focused, Fit and Fast.

Your success isn't based on how long you spend at your desk. You'll have contracted hours, but we're always happy to support flexible working wherever we can. That might mean working from home or different Nationwide offices or agreeing a working pattern to help you balance work and life. We will always strive to find a way that works for everyone.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, Northampton, Bournemouth or London office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you'll be doing

* Contribute to the design and execution of the data migration and integration strategy within the Mortgages area, leveraging cloud technologies (AWS, Azure) to support broader integration programme objectives.
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders, business analysts, and architects to translate functional and non-functional requirements into scalable, cloud-based technical data solutions.
* Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance transformation data pipelines using modern data engineering tools and cloud-native services (such as AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, etc.), ensuring quality, lineage, and auditability.
* Support data discovery activities and analysis to inform data mapping, profiling, and migration planning, especially in the context of mergers or acquisitions, with a focus on secure and efficient cloud data handling.
* Develop and maintain detailed technical design documents and data flow diagrams aligned with architectural principles, data governance standards, and best practices.
* Assist in the implementation and enforcement of best practices in data engineering, including cloud-based coding standards, testing strategies, and automation using CI/CD and/or DevOps tools.
* Partner with cloud and infrastructure teams to build and optimise data pipelines across hybrid environments (on-premises and AWS/cloud platforms), ensuring seamless integration and performance.
* Participate in technical reviews and sprint planning, contributing to continuous improvement in cloud delivery and engineering practices.
* Provide hands-on development and troubleshooting expertise throughout the project lifecycle, resolving data issues and ensuring completeness and accuracy of cloud-based migration efforts.
* Ensure alignment of delivery artefacts with the enterprise data strategy and technical roadmap set by data leadership, maintaining consistency across cloud and on-premises initiatives.
* Proactively identify risks, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies in integration processes, and drive continuous improvement through targeted technical enhancements and mentoring of junior engineers in cloud technologies.

About you

We need somebody with:

* Proven hands-on experience in data engineering, integration, and migration within complex data environments, including cloud and hybrid architectures.
* Solid technical skills in ETL development, data transformation, and performance tuning, with a strong grasp of cloud-based ETL frameworks and modern data engineering principles.
* Working experience in cloud based ETL tech such as DBT, AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, or similar cloud-native solutions.
* Proficiency in structured query languages, data modelling, and at least one programming or scripting language commonly used in data engineering (e.g., Python, Scala, SQL).
* Strong understanding of data quality, data governance, and metadata management practices across the data lifecycle, especially in cloud environments.
* Experience working in banking & financial services, particularly with mortgage data or customer-centric systems, ideally in cloud migration or transformation projects.
* Proven ability to support data migration efforts in M&A scenarios, including data discovery, profiling, mapping, and reconciliation, with exposure to cloud-based data migration tools.
* Familiarity with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and hybrid data solutions, with the ability to design and operate scalable data pipelines across on-premises and cloud environments.
* Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to thrive in Agile delivery environments, supported by a mindset focused on continuous improvement, learning, and engineering maturity—especially in the context of cloud adoption.
* Excellent collaboration skills across business, architecture, and engineering teams, promoting innovation and shared understanding of cloud technologies.
