Job Overview
Bank Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) position based at Frimley Park Hospital as part of the largest NHS‑led Pathology Services in the UK. The role is a bank position with shift work and may involve occasional work at Wexham Park Hospital.
Required Qualities & Experience
* Energetic, enthusiastic, well‑motivated individual with a good scientific background.
* Efficient, organised, good communication skills and attention to detail.
* Reliable, able to demonstrate practical skills and work as part of a team.
* Willing to embrace new ways of working, develop knowledge and participate in a shift system.
* Basic IT skills, keyboard proficiency and comfortable using a Laboratory Information Management System.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in preparation of analytical work for the Bacteriology Department under the supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
* Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.
* Communicate with pathology staff, hospital staff, porters, drivers and couriers.
* Support BMS staff by sorting, numbering and entering samples onto LIS.
* Operate department waste disposal systems including autoclaves safely.
* Process diagnostic samples (blood, CSF, urine, faeces, sputum, tissues, secretions) and assist in interpretation for pathogens.
* Monitor stock control of consumables held in stores.
* Ensure cleaning and defrosting of equipment such as fridges, freezers and incubators.
* Report refrigerator/freezer temperatures out of range to team leader or BMS staff daily.
* Work in cooperation with BMS staff to process workload timely and efficiently.
* Maintain appropriate level of IT skills: input patient and request data, maintain and amend patient records, interrogate laboratory and hospital databases, perform basic word processing and spreadsheets.
* Perform administrative tasks including archiving and retrieval of specimens, maintaining audit trails.
* Answer telephone calls, deal with messages and enquiries.
* Provide training support to new staff and demonstrate procedures to less experienced staff.
* Maintain good standards of discipline, dress, time‑keeping and behaviour.
* Maintain a clean and safe working environment through good laboratory practice – including disposal of clinical waste, autoclaving, decontamination.
* Participate fully in all aspects of the service including routine and non‑core hours.
