Role ID:

As a Project Management Degree Apprentice at Babcock, you’ll be part of something bigger from day one. While working towards a BSc in Project Management, you’ll contribute to projects that protect national security and support essential public infrastructure. You’ll gain real-world experience, learn from industry experts, and play a key role in delivering projects that help create a safer, more secure world.

About the programme

Getting things to happen how they should, when they should, safely and within budget is both a science and an art. On this programme, you’ll learn exactly how it’s done.

As a Project Management Degree Apprentice, you will become an integral part of our Project Management and Project Controls Discipline, working on a diverse range of projects where your contributions can make a significant impact.

You’ll be ensuring projects run smoothly, safely, and efficiently – always keeping time, cost, quality and risk in mind. Your typical daily activities will include:

1. Preparing planning schedules and activities for review
2. Defining work packages
3. Reconciling and analysing data into useful information
4. Developing communication plans
5. Producing reports on delivery, cost and quality
6. Collaborating with your teams to solve real world problems
7. Budgeting and resource management
8. Engaging with customers to provide updates

Over the course of your 4-year programme, you will undertake six placements, giving you the opportunity to experience different areas of the business. This will help you develop in-depth knowledge of project management and give you a strong start in your career.

Your placements may also include Project Controls, Project Planning, Risk Management, Production Management, Supply Chain Management, Commercial, In-Service Support, and Operations, among many other opportunities.

Your experiences will be broad and varied, allowing you to engage in projects that span from the depths of the ocean to the vastness of outer space, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to make a significant impact in your future career.

Your education/training

You’ll attend formal training one day a week at Weston College in Weston-Super-Mare, where you'll gain essential knowledge and skills to support your development. You will study to obtain the Project Management Qualification (PMQ) from the Association for Project Management (APM) and a BSc in Project Management from the University of the West of England.

To complement your studies, you will also participate in various in-house training courses. These courses will not only enhance your technical skills but also focus on developing essential soft skills, helping you to develop personal and teamwork capabilities that are vital for your career in project management.

You will be provided with a mentor, for day one of your apprenticeship, who alongside your line manager and project managers, will support you with your long-term development and offer guidance in your education and training.

Please note: Apprentices are expected to be in the office at least two days per week and attend university one day per week in person.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you will be well-prepared to take on a variety of roles within the project management field. Opportunities available to you may include positions such as Assistant Project Manager, Project Controller, Project Planner, Risk Specialist, Change Control Specialist, Cost Specialist, and Estimator.

Project Management can open the door to a wide variety of career paths. You might progress into more senior roles in project or project controls management, specialise in a particular area of project delivery, or move into programme or portfolio management. It can also lead to broader opportunities in related fields—such as becoming a Business Analyst, Operations Manager, or exploring other roles where project skills are highly valued.

What you’ll need

9. A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English.
10. One of the following: 3 A Levels at grade C or above, preferably in related subjects such as Maths, Science, or IT. A T Level Pass (with a grade C or above in the core). A BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM. Or an equivalent qualification.
11. Strong communication skills, the ability to work well in a team, good organisational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for project management.
12. Many of our apprenticeships are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance. Further details are available at .
