Nursing in a custodial environment provides an opportunity to offer a nurse-led health experience to patients with substantial health needs. The service operates 24/7 on an internal rotation basis, in a supportive team focused on personal and professional development.
Role and responsibilities
Working within HMP Lincoln, the Primary Healthcare Team provides care from initial assessment and clinical triage to emergency response, management of minor illness and injuries, nurse-led clinics for long-term conditions and health promotion. The aim is to provide healthcare to offenders equivalent to that available in the community. You will contribute to a consistent, equitable, high-quality and timely physical and mental health service for prisoners, with opportunities to develop skills in:
* Assessing patient conditions
* Triage and clinical interventions, including emergency care
* Leading and developing nurse-led clinics for health screening, vaccination and immunisation, and long-term conditions
You will be able to work autonomously while supported by a strong team when required.

Qualifications and experience
Qualifications
* Essential: Registered Nurse
* Desirable: Certificate/Diploma in Counselling
Experience
* Essential: Experience as a qualified nurse; experience assessing patient conditions, triaging services and providing clinical interventions; experience working effectively within an MDT
* Desirable: Previous experience in offender health or a secure environment; experience in emergency care; experience supporting patients with long-term conditions; experience collaborating with statutory agencies and mentoring junior staff
Knowledge
* Awareness of healthcare issues within criminal justice (e.g., substance misuse); assessment and triage skills; equal opportunities; local and national offender health strategy

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required. Applicants may need to pay for DBS checks, costs deducted from salary (standard: £26.40; enhanced: £54.40). DBS Update Service enrolment is encouraged (£16 per year).
