The Spinal Nursing team are a small, busy team who provide care for hundreds of patients every year, supporting young people from assessment through to discharge.
An opportunity has arisen for a temporary Band 7 registered nurse (child) to work 32 hours per week on a 6-month temporary secondment basis. Substantial experience in paediatric nursing at Band 6 or above is essential.
The role has a specific remit around reviewing the whole nursing spinal team and associated service provision.
The successful applicant will provide leadership to the spinal nursing and support team, setting an example of professional standards.
Experience in orthopaedic and spinal nursing care is essential and the applicant must have discussed this secondment with their line manager before applying.
Work alongside medical staff, technicians, physiotherapists and other professionals in both inpatient and outpatient settings, caring for patients with surgical and non-surgical spinal conditions.
Main duties of the job
Lead the delivery of a specialist nursing service for children, young people, and their families, implementing clinical policies, guidance, and standards to enhance care quality.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to develop the service plan, ensure appropriate resourcing, and maintain professional nursing standards.
Conduct regular service audits, manage the team, and deliver developmentally appropriate care for diverse patients with complex needs.
Provide expert advice, organise educational programs, promote health equity, and collaborate with stakeholders to continuously improve patient care and outcomes.
Job responsibilities
* Lead a specialised nursing service for children, young people, and their families, ensuring high-quality care through effective planning, resource management, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
* Implement clinical policies, guidance, and standards to enhance the quality of care.
* Set professional nursing standards and ensure Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.
* Influence change to practice within the multidisciplinary team where appropriate.
* Line‑manage the specialist nursing team, overseeing wellbeing, appraisal, mandatory training, performance and attendance.
* Ensure systems are in place for regular clinical supervision and support for team members.
Person specification
Qualifications and Training
* NMC / RNC/RN8 registration.
* Educated to degree level, with postgraduate training or experience and continued professional development to Master’s level or equivalent.
* 998 or mentorship/supervisor training (note: likely typo).
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate.
* Safeguarding Champion Training.
* Leadership/management qualification or willingness to work towards it.
* Non-Medical Prescribing.
Experience
* Experience in paediatric nursing within a specialised care setting.
* Experience in clinical assessment, planning and implementation of care pathways for patients with complex needs.
* Experience of assessing and interpreting patient conditions and taking appropriate action.
* Experience of critically evaluating actions and results while planning for the short and long term.
* Experience of undertaking audit to inform or produce changes to practice.
* Experience of line management and budget management.
Knowledge and Skills
* In-depth knowledge of paediatric nursing and experience in managing care for children and young people within the specialty.
* Ability to build collaborative relationships with the multidisciplinary team and wider health community.
* Ability to communicate sensitive and confidential information concerning patients/families such as safeguarding or life-limiting conditions while adhering to GDPR standards.
* Understanding of current developments within NHS affecting the speciality.

* Current driving licence and use of car.
