The Role

The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology seeks to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer (T&S) in International Public Policy & Diplomacy.

The Politics Unit in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology is home to a diverse and friendly community of staff and students, committed to world-leading research and excellent, innovative teaching. We conduct interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse public policy and international politics research and teach international politics and public policy at all degree levels.

We're based in the newly refurbished Henry Daysh Building, bringing our school community closer together.

You will contribute to teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will deliver the specialised Stage 2 UG module POL2310 ‘International Organizations and Diplomacy’ and provide crucial teaching capacity for compulsory team-taught modules at PGT level, including POL8072 ‘Public Policy in Practice: from the Local to the Global’. You will also advise UG and PGT dissertations and final year projects.

You will have experience of teaching undergraduates and/or postgraduates. Ideally, you will have a track record of innovative teaching practice, including the use of simulations. Beyond classroom instruction, you will help us establish further strategic partnerships with public and civic organisations to strengthen Politics’ distinctive experiential learning offerings.

You will have a track-record of publications in public policy in high impact journals and other outlets commensurate with your career stage. You will be collegial and keen to develop your academic career in a collaborative environment that values and supports teaching, research, and engagement.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching and Learning

1. Design and deliver high quality teaching and learning material, resources, and activities to students in line with School and Faculty teaching objectives and timetable requirements.
2. Teach on undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including co-teaching team taught modules.
3. Provide a range of timely student support to enhance the student experience and achievements. Set, mark, and assess course work and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students.
4. Provide personal tutoring and pastoral guidance (when appropriate, obtaining specialist support and advice).
5. Supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ dissertations and research projects.
6. Help Politics/School establish further strategic partnerships with public and civic organisations to strengthen our distinctive experiential learning offerings.
7. Evaluate own practice and presently have or a willingness to work towards a category of Fellowship with the HEA.

Research and Innovation

8. Plan, organise and carry out scholarship research, to ensure the contribution of new knowledge, insight, and innovation to the relevant field of international public policy & diplomacy to base your teaching on.
9. Contribute to the wider internal and external research and scholarship community e.g. by reviewing journal articles, active engagement with relevant university research clusters, and membership of professional bodies.
10. Where appropriate participate in formal knowledge transfer activities and consultancy.

Engagement and Impact

11. Promote the University’s values and support widening access to our programmes and facilities to people who have historically had little involvement in universities.
12. Develop programmes of teaching which include knowledge sharing with the private and public sectors, and with civil society, with especial reference to marginalised and disadvantaged social groups.
13. Contribute to the development of public policy e.g. through advice to public bodies at local, regional, national and international levels, as appropriate.
14. Contribute to professional development in your field by active membership of learned societies and professional institutions.

Administration and Management

15. Take responsibility for a defined management or administrative role such as Module Leader, Personal Tutor, and/or other duties as agreed with the Head of Unit.
16. Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees.

The Person (Essential)

You will be collegial and keen to develop your academic career in a collaborative environment that values and supports teaching, research and impact. You will be enthusiastic about discussing international public policy and diplomacy with students and non-academic audiences.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

17. Experience of lecturing, seminar teaching, assessment, and/or dissertation supervision in the subfield of international public policy and diplomacy.
18. Experience of providing academic guidance and/or pastoral care to students.
19. Experience of providing support or mentoring to students.
20. Experience of engaging with non-academic partners and organisations.
21. A track record, commensurate with your career stage, of published research in international public policy and diplomacy in high impact journals and other outlets.

Qualifications

27. You will hold a Ph.D in International Public Policy and/or Diplomacy or a relevant discipline.
