Cardiac Physiologist

We are seeking a Cardiac Physiologist who is ready to take the next step in their career to join our team at Harefield Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.

Key Salary & Benefits:

This position includes a Recruitment and Retention Premium (RRP) of £5,275, in addition to the basic salary (non‑pensionable). The RRP is subject to review on 31 March 2026.

Patient / Customer Care

* Assist in the management of patients within EP and CRM sections at Harefield. Analyse investigation results and write reports for use by physicians. Counsel patients and relatives about all aspects of cardiac investigations/procedures, including reasons for hospital admission/intervention.
* During all cardiac investigations where the patient is at immediate risk of arrhythmia or arrest, monitor ECG, report immediately in event of any rhythm change/arrest, and respond immediately to rescue the patient (provide life support/external defibrillation).
* Where qualified, participate at a high level of competency in other sections of the Cardiac Physiology Department when necessary, including invasive and non‑invasive cardiology, cardiac theatre, ITU and ward monitoring, cardioversions, temporary cardiac pacing and IABPs. Participate in the hospital on‑call rota if required and concentrate for long periods of time (> 2 hours at a time). Contribute to waiting‑list initiatives in the catheter lab, lab over‑runs and private cases.
* During pacemaker/ICD implantation and other catheter laboratory, ITU and cardiac theatre procedures and pacemaker/ICD follow‑up clinics, assist in moving patients from examination couch to trolley/chair, clean clinic/catheter laboratory equipment and furniture after procedures (including infected cases), move heavy equipment, and wear a lead apron in angiography laboratories.
* Resolve objections or complaints from patients/relatives regarding procedures using persuasion and tact.
* Behave tactfully and sympathetically towards patients who may be extremely anxious, especially when giving information, results or during critical conditions; explain to patients the reasons for relevant tests and comfort them during stressful events.
* Attend mortuaries at associated hospitals to download data from implantable cardioverter‑defibrillators and render devices safe for explant prior to cremation and/or post‑mortem.


Policy Development

* Participate in Cardiac Physiology Department and Trust meetings, providing input to purchasing policies and investigation protocols for the department.
* Assist in the management and implementation of these policies and protocols relevant to EP/CRM and report on budget consequences to the leads for EP and Devices or the Principal Clinical Scientist.
* Participate in patient improvement services meetings to maximise catheter laboratory times and improve patient flow.


Service Development

* Participate in Cardiac Physiology Department meetings, providing input to development of business plans and service developments.
* Assist in managing and implementing policies affecting the cardiology section and departmental budget.
* Continue critical reviews of working practices, stay abreast of new technology, and maintain a good overall knowledge of investigative cardiology, attending scientific and technical meetings locally and abroad.
* Participate in the appraisal of new equipment for use within the Cardiac Physiology Department and catheter labs.


People Management

* Assist in recruitment of appropriately qualified staff and help formulate staff rotas to manage departmental workload.
* Assist in induction of all new departmental staff and play a major role in their training.
* Participate in appraisal of all Cardiac Physiology staff and offer counselling and guidance.
* Set and maintain standards of appearance and professional attitude, uphold the professional code of conduct required by SCST, RCCP, AHCS and HCPC, and act as a role model to peers.


Communication

* Participate in and provide specialist input to all Trust meetings, a programme of quality control and technical audit as part of the Trust’s clinical governance programme, supporting the Cardiology Directorate’s aim of clinical excellence.
* Liaise with the Clinical Engineering Department and equipment suppliers as requested to ensure that all non‑disposable equipment in the EP lab/Pacing/ICD area is maintained appropriately and remains operational.
* Ensure all relevant MHRA notices are acted upon appropriately.
* Ensure patients, relatives and visitors are acknowledged in an appropriate and friendly manner.
* Respect patients’ privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs.
* Answer the telephone correctly and direct calls to the appropriate person/department when required, respond to queries from patients, GPs, other hospitals, including technical questions concerning monitoring equipment.
* Develop and use effective communication skills, communicating appropriately with staff, consultants, patients and relatives, facilitating effective communication within the department and with other departments throughout the Trust, and fostering good liaison and working relationships.
* Contribute to the development of positive staff morale and maintain awareness of procedures involving patient/visitor/staff complaints.


Resource Management

* Provide input to the department’s annual budget request and participate in departmental stock control, ensuring adequate stock for the specific cardiology section.


Information Management

* Enter data into departmental databases, write reports on cardiac investigations performed and input them into the relevant computer‑based systems.


Research

* Instigate, coordinate, participate in and report on research into appropriate aspects of Cardiac Physiology or management issues for publication or internal use.


Further Sections

* Ensure all team members have a real voice in the development of the EP and Device services.
* Maximise the potential of all team members.
* Ensure all team members have meaningful appraisal/ personal development plans that include feedback from internal customers and team members.
* Provide a safe and attractive working environment within available resources.
* Attend and play a major role in corporate groups as a representative of the directorate and team.
* Represent the Trust at regional, national, and international conferences and on working groups as appropriate.
* Abide by the Trust’s core behaviours for staff and all other Trust policies: standing financial instructions, research governance, clinical governance, patient and public involvement, codes and practices, health and safety policies.

* Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
