Job Overview

Fatigue among the health and social care sector is seldomly acknowledged as a risk to workforce wellbeing and patient safety, whereas other safety‑critical industries have established systematic approaches to fatigue risk management. This pilot seeks to co‑create and test a comprehensive organisational approach to fatigue risk management in the absence of a regulatory NHS framework. The Project Co‑ordinator role is to assist in the development and implementation of the pilot focused on identifying, assessing and managing the risks associated with occupational fatigue across six sites of the Bristol NHS Group (central Bristol, Southmead and Weston).

This 12‑month fixed‑term post is funded by NHS Charities Together and NHS England. The postholder will be required to work Monday to Friday, which may occasionally include evenings, nights, and weekends.

This vacancy is open to internal candidates at NBT and UHBW. One‑hour interviews will take place in‑person in Bristol. The date, times, venue and title of presentation are yet to be confirmed. Please direct enquiries to Claire Haley, Workplace Wellbeing Manager or Laura Pickup, Head of Human Factors: laura.pickup@uhbw.nhs.uk.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The role of Project Co‑ordinator is to support an evolving internal programme directed by the Head of Human Factors (Patient Safety), reporting to the Project Manager and multidisciplinary leads to develop and implement a pilot project focused on colleague health and wellbeing by identifying, assessing and managing the risks associated with occupational fatigue across six pilot sites of Bristol NHS Group (central Bristol, Southmead and Weston).

The post holder will assist in the co‑creation of a comprehensive and sustainable Fatigue Risk Management (FRM) programme to support the organisation in enabling colleagues to remain safe, alert, and able to perform their duties safely, efficiently and with compassion while maintaining a high standard of personal and team health and wellbeing. This includes addressing control measures aimed at mitigating fatigue, which includes shift and rota scheduling, workload management, and environmental factors, as well as education and resources. A data‑driven approach will be applied to the review of monitoring systems, incident reports, and colleague feedback to address risks of fatigue that are prevalent within the health and care sector.
