We're looking for a commercially-minded and technically strong Portfolio Underwriting Manager to lead and shape a key part of our specialist liability book. The Role:
This is a pivotal position within a fast-paced and growing underwriting environment. You’ll take ownership of a national construction liability portfolio, setting underwriting strategy and appetite while supporting product development and risk selection across a wide range of trades and contractor sizes.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Management: Oversee the performance and profitability of the UK construction liability portfolio, including public, employers’ and products liability lines.
Underwriting Strategy: Develop and implement underwriting appetite and pricing strategy in line with market conditions and internal objectives.
Performance Monitoring: Use MI and analytics to track trends, claims experience and broker behaviour, adjusting tactics to protect and grow the book.
Broker Engagement: Work closely with our panel of specialist brokers to understand market demand, provide guidance on complex cases, and support growth initiatives.
Product Development: Lead on product innovation and wording updates in collaboration with legal, actuarial and claims teams.
Mentoring & Oversight: Support a team of underwriters by providing technical expertise and coaching, ensuring consistency of underwriting decisions across the portfolio.
About You:
Significant experience in construction liability underwriting, ideally in a portfolio or senior technical role.
Strong understanding of UK construction risks, trade-specific exposures, and evolving regulatory and legislative trends. Proven ability to interpret performance data and translate it into actionable underwriting decisions.
Comfortable working autonomously with a strategic mindset and commercial acumen.
Excellent communicator, capable of influencing at all levels – both internally and in the broker market.
A genuine interest in product development and improving underwriting tools and capabilities.
ACII qualification (or working towards) preferred.
Flexible Working:
This is a home-based role, with occasional travel to regional broker partners, internal meetings, or industry events. You'll enjoy the autonomy of remote working, combined with the support and collaboration of a high-performing national team.
