Research Associate - Ultrafast Laser and Terahertz Techniques for Novel Acceleration

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Research Associate (Terahertz Accelerator Science). This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge experimental physics research focused on terahertz (THz) accelerator technologies and ultrafast beam manipulation. You will work within the Cockcroft Institute at STFC Daresbury Laboratory, advancing innovative approaches to accelerator science in a dynamic and inclusive research environment.

You will be responsible for:

1. Developing ultrafast laser-driven high-field terahertz radiation sources
2. Conducting experimental research into beam manipulation and plasma-based acceleration techniques
3. Analysing and interpreting experimental data, supporting the design of research programmes
4. Collaborating with internal teams and external partners, including UK and international facilities
5. Contributing to publications, presentations, and supervision of student researchers

About You

Essential Criteria:

6. A PhD (or near completion) in physics or a related discipline
7. Hands-on experience with ultrafast laser systems and experimental techniques
8. Ability to conduct high-quality independent and collaborative research
9. Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
10. Commitment to safe laboratory practices and equality, diversity and inclusion

Desirable Criteria:

11. Experience with THz generation or ultrafast optics
12. Knowledge of accelerator physics or plasma-based acceleration methods
13. Experience working with laser or vacuum systems
14. Track record of publishing in scientific journals
15. Experience supporting or supervising students
