Description

Lady Margaret Hall is a constituent College of the University of Oxford and is located in peaceful, spacious gardens beside the University Parks.

LMH, as it is fondly known, was founded in 1878 with a dual passion for learning and for equality, making it possible, for the first time, for women to study at Oxford. Today, the College continues to draw inspiration from this great founding vision. It is now a co­educational academic community of c.400 undergraduate and c.220 postgraduate students, committed to research and scholarship and to effective, highly personalised teaching and learning for students from all backgrounds.

Purpose of the Job
Responsible for assisting the FOH Manager in the day to day running and management of the FOH catering team. In the absences of the FOH Manager, the FOH supervisor is responsible for supporting the Head of Catering in the running of the entire FOH department, meeting targets and budgets.

They support the FOH Manager on ensuring that the catering department is run in accordance to Health & Safety, HACCP, COSHH & RIDDOR regulations.

Relationships:
Responsible to: FOH Manager
Responsible for: Day to day duties of catering assistants, casual catering assistants and agency staff
Liaising with: Kitchen team, Conference Team, customers & suppliers



Main Tasks

Delivering the College Catering Ethos and Vision
* Food and drinks service is vital to the college: we aspire to provide a flexible, modern and imaginative set of services which meet the needs of and excites our students, our staff members, their visitors and our commercial customers. One key point is to consider the diversity of cultural and religious backgrounds of our internal & external customers.
* FOH leadership team's role is to manage and develop the College's catering services towards this vision.
* As a place of learning the team must be willing to engage with the rest of the college community creatively to help maximise the impact of our vision.
* Work with the Head Chef and FOH Manager to reduce the College's direct environmental impact, increase our social impact and improve the sustainability of our operation.
People Manager
* Supervise staff working on each day and manage the events booked according to the Front of House Manager, booking software, activity schedule etc. liaising with kitchen staff, departmental managers and other departments where necessary
* Lead the FOH team visibly, by example and in line with our values: Excellence, Community, Fairness, Knowledge & Understanding, creating a positive and inclusive work environment for all.
* Ensure high standards of appearance and personal hygiene by setting a high example to all FOH Team in appearance and approach to work,
* Be a leader and exemplar to all catering assistants in terms of how to work together, preparing and setting up all catering areas and events spaces across the College.
* Be "hands on" in the delivery of catering provisions and events.
* Support the FOH Manager, training and developing FOH staff in line with College Values and the Investors in People framework.
* Support the FOH Manager in agreeing personal objectives with the team members and monitor and support their progress towards their objectives through 1-1 and periodic review meetings.
* Train staff to reach higher and better standards and develop their own personal skills.
* In absence of the FOH Manager, to deal with staff issues that may arise on a day-to-day basis and to communicate these to the FOH Manager and/or Head of Catering
* Ensuring that staff rosters are effectively managed on shift
* Be flexible in personally covering shifts when necessary
Technical Responsibilities
* Brief FOH team accordingly on the daily task and areas of responsibility.
* Lead the interaction with customers: welcome, greet and seat all customers and guests, resolve complaints etc
* Lead all services to ensure high standards and liaise with all other departments to make sure each service and events is runs smoothly.
* Ensure all food displayed is correctly stored, is in good condition and is attractively displayed.
* Making sure compliance is met with dietary and religious requirements for our diverse student, internal & external customer base.
* Ensuring all HACCP procedures are followed by the entire team: from the point of receiving of the goods to the point of selling them, using all appropriate HACCP control sheets, ensuring correct labelling and stock rotation
* Making sure, the correct portion control standards are adhered, including reviewing stipulated portion sizes whenever the need arises.
* Report and communicate any more serious issues to the FOH Manager and/or Head of Catering, keeping a proactive and solution focussed approach.
* Assist in service and regular maintenance/cleaning of equipment as trained.
* Confirm that all opening and closing procedures, reports etc have been completed to ensure that the area is left secure for the next service. Deputise as department's opening and closing manager on duty.
* Attend any scheduled meetings necessary.
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by the possibly changing overall objectives of Lady Margaret Hall.

* Good computer literacy skills to enable the use of College systems to carry out duties as outlined above using KX, EPSYS, CINTRA, Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook and other applications.
* Appropriate level food safety and general health and safety qualification
* Good grasp of numbers, budgets and management accounting
* Physically able to complete lifting, walking, or handling of materials. Physical activities such as cleaning rooms, setting out and clearing of tables, arranging furniture, cleaning spillages as and when they occur.



Terms and Conditions

The salary will be £31,291 per annum. This is a full-time permanent position working 39 hours per week.

Benefits of working for the College include 37 days of holiday (including bank holidays). The option to join the University pension scheme. One free meal whilst on duty when the kitchens are open. There will be an initial probationary period of six months. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK.
