Job Title: Electrical Engineer Substation Lead. Locations: Rochester, NY; Lancaster, NY; Kirkwood,; Elmira, NY. Reports to Manager - Projects Unit. Salary: $114,332 to $142,916 based on experience.
Position Overview
Responsible for substation designs including protection engineering for major capital projects in New York (NYSEG and RG&E). Lead and guide all engineering activities for electric transmission and substation system protection projects within the Powering New York portfolio. Reports to the Unit Manager and works day‑to‑day with a cross‑functional project team.
Key Responsibilities
* Capital project engineering execution with focus on substation design, protection and control systems, system studies, automation, integration, and settings through all phases (scoping & budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management & design, construction, commissioning, closeout).
* Perform standard and complex electrical engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology.
* Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or improve processes/services.
* Lead and create new conceptual designs and oversee the work of external detailed designers.
* Solve unique and complex electrical engineering problems and analyze solutions using standard procedures for lines and power engineering.
* Ensure all substation engineering designs meet applicable codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, NESC, FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, NY PSC, etc.).
* Provide technical leadership on complex projects with wide impact.
* Mentor, develop and support team in technical skills.
* Collaborate across departments; liaise/direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices.
* Work independently with little supervision.
Required Qualifications
* Minimum 7+ years of technical experience in protection engineering or related field.
* Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent degree with more than 20 years relevant experience.
* Strong theoretical engineering knowledge in planning, operations, design, analytics, modeling, and calculations.
* Practical engineering experience in construction standardization and economic analysis.
* Ability to document and review engineering work for compliance.
* Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards.
* Excellent diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
* Proven project leadership and strong communication skills.
* Strong management and leadership skills, ability to drive change and adoption of new technologies.
* Stakeholder and customer service engagement experience.
* Ability to manage competing priorities with sound engineering and financial judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
* Professional Engineering License.
* Expert level skills in Substation Protection, Transmission Protection, Automation & Integration System Design, Communication System Design, Fault / Transient Analysis, Insulation Coordination, Substation Equipment Commissioning, IEC61850 and Process Bus.
* Experience in a utility environment and knowledge of construction and maintenance standards.
* Knowledge of engineering standards up to 345 kV.
