Are you an enthusiastic individual looking for a new challenge? Our team is offering a role for a part-time (15.0 hours per week) position for the role of Blood Transfusion Practitioner Assistant.
Previous experience or knowledge of the blood transfusion process and its training requirements is desirable, but is not essential as full training will be provided for the right candidate.
The post is working within a busy, modern and well equipped blood transfusion department within the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide specialist services in Cancer, Trauma, Maternity and Neonatal Medicine, in addition to the routine transfusion services. We are a one of 3 trauma centres in the region and classed as a high user of blood.
Our aim is to find a conscientious and well-organised individual to perform blood transfusion training and competency assessment. You will monitor monthly training reports, identify and work with areas where improved compliance is required. You will also be assisting the Transfusion Practitioner Team in championing blood transfusion safety within the Trust. You would therefore bring great people skills, a willingness to learn, brilliant communication skills and an ability to prioritise.
Main duties of the job
You will be expected to work with the Blood Transfusion Practitioners and Blood Safety Co-ordinator across Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, as well as external sites such as private hospitals and hospices.
You will work alongside two experienced Blood Transfusion Practitioners and a Blood Safety Co-ordinator to primarily provide Blood Transfusion training for all staff grades. This is to ensure that blood transfusion is carried out by trained and competent staff and that blood transfusion practice is safe for our patients.
You will also participate in the revision of policies that incorporate training. They will provide statistical training information to be cascaded at the Hospital Transfusion Committee and other relevant meetings. You will help to develop effective training programmes in conjunction with the Transfusion Practitioners and deliver these to clinical staff. You will review training needs analysis reports and build their own tailored Blood Transfusion education timetable.
You will enable the Trust to improve safety and effectiveness in the practice of blood transfusion by fulfilling the recommendations of HSC 2007/001 "Better Blood Transfusion". Specifically the role will concentrate on the training and competency of staff involved in the blood transfusion process. This will help the trust to achieve 100% compliance as required by the CQC and MHRA.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include but not limited to:
1. To train clinical and laboratory staff in the use of the remote issue blood fridges
2. Maintain training records and provide relevant feedback and follow up on these
3. Complete Blood Transfusion competency assessments in line with the Trust's monthly Training Needs Analysis
4. Assists in the reporting of all adverse incidents in relation to training and ensures these are reported to Datix (and to the MHRA/SABRE/SHOT/NHSBT where appropriate)
5. Work with Blood Transfusion Practitioners and Blood Safety Co-ordinator to improve the safety of Blood Transfusion Practice within the Trust and external sites
6. Develop and cascade educational material for staff, patients and carers involved in Blood Transfusion
7. Be an ambassador for safe blood transfusion trustwide
8. Network with laboratory and clinical areas
9. Be a point of contact for all things Blood Transfusion for the Clinical Educators

Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
10. Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care OR Attended Assistant Practitioner programme OR Nursing Associate Qualification
11. GCSE English & Maths Grade 4-9 or grade C and above OR Functional Skills Maths & English level 2
