Overview

Boundary Layer and Orographic Processes Foundation Scientist role at Met Office. This range is provided by Met Office. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.

We are looking for an exceptional Boundary Layer and Orographic Processes Foundation Scientist to help us make a difference to our planet. This role may be suitable for hybrid working (part in the office, part remote). The location advertised will be your contractual place of work. This opportunity is full time (37 hours per week) or a minimum of 30 hours per week can be considered. We will try to agree a flexible pattern that works for everyone.

Responsibilities

* Evaluate current and prototype regional forecast model configurations by comparing to observations.
* Investigate how the surface and topography modulate the local thermodynamic state and contribute to low-visibility conditions.
* Develop better representation of the key atmospheric processes to improve forecasts.
* Present your work to key stakeholders.
* Contribute to project reports and the publication of scientific papers.


What you will learn and contribute

The BLOG group studies boundary layer and orographic processes, winds over mountains, turbulence interactions with clouds, radiation and precipitation, and how research translates to operational forecasts for decision-making. You will work with Operational Meteorologists and teams focusing on postprocessing and verification to identify customer requirements and prioritise future model developments.


Essential Criteria, skills and experience

* Expert by nature: Knowledge and experience equivalent to a university degree (2:1 or above) in physical sciences with a strong mathematical component.
* Expert by nature: Experience in using scientific software to analyse and interpret data.
* We keep evolving: Willingness to learn new IT skills, including Python, Fortran and Linux, and the ability to run and develop models on a supercomputer.
* We are a force for good: Good oral and written communication skills to explain complex scientific information to diverse audiences.
* We live and breathe it: Ability to work independently on challenging problems and deliver high-quality scientific output.
* We are better together: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and deliver quality outputs on time.
* We live and breathe it: Desire to apply scientific analysis to understand the world and deliver useful outputs to stakeholders.

Rewards and benefits

Your total reward package will be up to £40,524 annually, which includes:

* An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
* Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
